Orange UK Mobile Data Allowance Question

Hi there, I recently went over my Orange data allowance by a considerable sum. I have the same handset I have had for the past 2 years, I use it for exactly the same things. My question is, I have 500mb per month data allowance. I have started regularly checking my data usage.
To date from my phone settings I can see, I have sent 8.2mb and received 14.7mb. Do I need to combine these figures and subtract from my 500mb? Or is it only received?
Very confusing!

I am pretty sure it's both sent and received.0

Grumbler is right it is sent and received. For example if you uploaded a picture to Facebook of 5mb and then went onto your Facebook and downloaded it to your phone you would have used 10mb.
Any data transfer over the network comes off youre allowance.0
