New York but what other cities

  • Your itinerary sounds great. You'll enjoy Boston, NY and DC, albeit I haven't personally been to the latter yet.

However out of Boston, NY and Chicago, then Chicago is my favourite. It's a great city, compact and easy to get into downtown from the airport.

Another option is Philly. Fine for a couple of nights, taking in the Independence area and maybe a visit to the Mint. Thoroughly recommend the Philadelphia Walking Tour (check google) where you get a good introduction to the city.

Chicago is fab - maybe combine with Detroit esp if you're into music, could cross into Canada and visit Toronto as well.

Yes, the trains in Boston go from South Station which is easily accessible (the Boston subway system is great) to Penn Station in NYC which is only a few blocks from Times Square. In DC the station is the famous Union Station which is very central.

That sounds great youve just pretty much planned my trip haha

I would love to take in Philly aswell whilst im in that area but think I'd be pushing it, I'm off work 16 days, 3 Boston, 5 NYC, 3 Philly, 3 Washington would only leave me a few days rest before work begins again :(

inmypocketbottheirs - I definitely want to do Chicago but as mentioned earlier I think ill take that up with Detroit and Toronto on my next visit

Yes Boston is another I fancy, just wonder if any others have done any of these together

I intend to fly into Chicago and fly out of Washington to and from Heathrow

    Regards

    Kev

What are your interests in Boston? Just because I maybe could point you at some more "local known" things. I lived there for 8 years.

Or depending on the time of year:

(I'm not affiliated, I just miss the place)

The Science Museum is brilliant of course, I'd recommend springing for one of the IMAX movies there (rather than at the Aquarium) simply because it's a dome rather than a flat screen, really cool. http://www.mos.org/imax

    Thanks for all the advice

So do you think this is doable

    Fly Heathrow to Boston
    Train Boston to NYC
    Train NYC to Washington
    Fly Washington to Heathrow

    Regards

    Kev

    Hi

I did this for the Millenium, except I added the train from Washington to Chicago at the end and flew back from Chicago

    Its more than achievable

    Enjoy

    Hi

It was about 18 hours overnight

From memory, carriages have allocated seats to different destinations eg 1 carriage to Chicago, 1 to earlier destination on the route, etc

The seats were like first class on a plane, eg fully reclinable to lie flat

There are other things such as a movie coach and I think was a double decker train

You pass through some wonderful and varied scenery if i recall

They also have offers on the train eg Beer and wines half price for the 3rd and 6th hour of travel from memory ( or something like that)

Just been checking the train cost / travel time from Boston to NYC and noticed checked baggage

    Taken from the website
    "No Checked Baggage Service
Checked baggage service is not offered on this train. Make sure to read the guidelines for carry-on baggage when making travel plans. Due to limited space onboard trains we ask that passengers follow the Amtrak Carry-On Baggage policy listed below. Baggage that goes over the restrictions may not be accepted onboard.

    2 Bags — 50 lbs. — 28" x 22" x 14" Each
    Pacific Surfliner — 28" x 22" x 11"

Now this isn't going to be any good to me as ill have 2 averaged sized cases

Is there any other options ??

Note you will need a roomette or above to get a lie flat bed on this room. The seats do recline but nowhere near flat.

    Hi

On a journey like this I always travel with 1 rucksack circa 70L and 1 cabin max bag without problems.

From memory there was plenty of room underneath the seat and there were racks above your head, similar to UK trains.

Maybe you need to rethink your packing / luggage :D

    Thanks
