Hi everyone
I'm going to New York June 2014 and will be booking soon, I'm also wanting to take in 2 other cities ideally Chicago 3 nights, New York 5 nights and Washington 3 nights
I'm not sure if Chicago and Washington are the ones to do or are there any other good reports of others nearby.
I've done LA, Vegas and San Francisco so want to stay near or around New York
I'm happy to fly or bus/metro between the cities
Will 3 nights be enought time in Chicago and Washington
After some advice please
Regards
Kev

Washington has amazing museums-we were there five days and didn't see everything-I guess it depends what you're looking for.
Haven't been to Chicago...but I would love to go to Boston.import this0 -
Yes Boston is another I fancy, just wonder if any others have done any of these together
I intend to fly into Chicago and fly out of Washington to and from Heathrow

Haven't been to Washington or Boston - both on the very long "places to go" list however have been to Chicago quite a few times now and love it. It's quite green and spacious for a big city and has a very different feel to NY. 3 nights would let you see the city highlights, perhaps take an architecture cruise from Lake Michigan, visit Millenium Park, the Sears Tower (can't remember the new name) etc.
I can't quite explain the attraction but it keeps drawing me back.
It's a bit subjective I guess, some people favour the East coast cities. Philadelphia is also on my list - I have a secret desire to run up the stairs at the Philly Museum of Art like Sylvester Stallone in Rockyand I would like to see the Liberty Bell.
I'm sure you will have a great time whatever you decide - and of course you will still have options for a later trip!0 -
Thanks for that Scottishminnie, i have heard Chicago is definitely worth a visit, I will only have 3 nights as I need the 5 at New York for the wedding / sightseeing0

If you do NYC then either DC or Boston can be done by train in a few hours to save messing around with airports and planes. Internal flights in the US are never fun. Each is easily worth 3-4 days. Philly is also doable on the east coast but you may struggle to do 4 days there.
Personally, I'd stick to the east coast for this trip and then do Chicago and the mid-west another time.0 -
Thanks for all the advice
So do you think this is doable
Fly Heathrow to Boston
Train Boston to NYC
Train NYC to Washington
Fly Washington to Heathrow

Yes, very doable. Sounds like a great trip. Taking the train is certainly better than flying. You can get singles for around $49 on the regional services or pay a about twice the price more for the quicker and more comfortable Acela Express.0 -

Excellent thanks for that, I take it the trains are pretty close to the city centres for ease of access...
My next ??? What other cities are around Chicago that would be worth visiting on my trip after this one as I definitely want to see Chicago, I've done internal flights once before it wasn't too bad but it just takes up a lot of time at airport and flying pretty much a day wasted

Yes, the trains in Boston go from South Station which is easily accessible (the Boston subway system is great) to Penn Station in NYC which is only a few blocks from Times Square. In DC the station is the famous Union Station which is very central.
You'll have to ask someone else about Chicago. The only part of the city I have ever been to was the airport en route to somewhere else.0
