Asda have billions, they also have liability insurance. Personally I would be looking for the full new replacement value of everything that was in the box. The fact that you were about to donate it is immaterial. It could just as easily have been a £1000 vase!

Thats completely immaterial. If the OP had originally paid say £80 for the items (glass ornaments and cuddly toys), then the fact is that due to the actions of the Asda employee, she now no longer has them and would need to spend £80 to replace them. Whether she intended to give them away to be sold for pennies or not has no bearing. That is what liability insurance is for, and the cost to the organisation, in this case Asda, is built into their profit margins and ultimately what you pay them for goods as a consumer.
