Wet hair is extremely fragile so you must never use a brush on it except when it's dry. Use a wide-toothed comb to de-tangle before you rinse off the conditioner. I'd have a think about using a deep-conditioning mask once a week and never EVER use heat on your hair.

Hairnet is a great idea, hadn't thought of that! Was going to suggest that maybe a plait would be better, that way the split hair would be at the bottom and would be cut off when you had your hair trimmed.

As for conditioners, the best I've ever known is henna wax - I guess you can still get it? For fine hair just use it once a week/two weekly. Never use elastic bands, or anything similar, ie: hair noodles.

Try starting from within..eating walnuts and avocados is good for your hair and scalp. So is oily fish. Make fruit smoothies using avocado to thicken. It takes a good 3 weeks or so to see a difference but I did this when I went through a period of having bone dry, brittle hair and it really helped massively.

My hairdresser recommended a protein spray too and try not to brush too much. Good luck!
