Returning a suit

Hi all,
I bought a tuxedo from a high street shop for an awards ceremony last week. After about an hour and a half of wearing it both buttons had come off the front. This was an embarrassment as I was meeting some VIPs and collecting an award and had the jacket flapping open.

I took it back today stating that it was not of expected quality and didn't last a reasonable time. Shops attitude was that they were only buttons and could be sown back on and as it had been worn they couldn't refund. I said I understand their returns policy but that my statuary rights mean override this, and what is more I ave no use for this suit now. The shop stood firm and said I could always try customer services, so I guess I will see what that delivers. 'twas annoying that they couldn't refund me there and then and decided that the buttons falling off wasn't a big deal.

Sorry for the moan. Just had to get it off my chest!

The weirdest part of your post? ... 'what is more I ave [sic] no use for this suit now'.

Is this what you told them? Then no wonder they didn't want to help you because, frankly, it sounds like you've bought the suit for a one-off do, worn it, then tried to get your money back because by the time you're invited to another posh do, you'll be too fat/thin to get in this one.

Sorry, but you sound like a chancer.

Buttons falling off isn't a big deal.

Just get a needle and thread out and then put it on ebay.

Methinks you are a chancerand clutching at straws now you don't need it anymore......
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

Would you not notice if both the buttons were so loose when putting on the suit?

I'm also thinking chancer, but if legitimate the shop are within their rights to offer a repair (although it would be far easier to do it yourself).

Interesting that you all think I am a chancer, I assure you I am not but of course you're welcome to that opinion and value your replies.

I personally don't see how the buttons are different to any other fault such as the stitching coming loose within an hour of wearing. This is a quality defect and caused me to feel worried and embarrassed.

I had noticed that the buttons were loose when I put it on that evening when getting out of the taxi at the event but it was all a bit late then.

You brought that upon yourself by saying:

Perhaps you should've bought the next size up. ;)

Haha, it fitted well - anyway they fitted it in the shop.

I understand saying I don't need it anymore has got the suspicions up in your synical minds, but it is the truth. I bought something specifically for an event and it wasn't durable to last that event as I expected. If it had been a normal suit then fair enough I would be able to use it again and express my dissapointment and have it repaired. Anyway I will stop repeating myself.

If I was just trying it on I wouldn't be having a moan on here!

If this was me the very least I would expect would be for the retailer to arrange for the suit to be repaired and I would request they checked that all buttons had been sewn on correctly.

Had the buttons stayed on then the OP would still have the suit.

So if the shop repair it and sow on the buttons then the OP will be in the same position as above.

I would however check all the other sowing, the seams etc before returning.

Thanks that is a very good way of looking at it. I am perhaps being clouded by my anger and embarrassment of it happening at the event itself. I read the 'sad farts' guidelines on this website and then headed to the shop armed with that information. I did infer that whether I would use the goods again or not because they were faulty I was entitled to return them and choose a refund over repair/swap, I think if I was talking about something other than clothing more people would be with me?
