September 2013 Grocery Challenge

  • Another NSD for me today :) I bought a leg of lamb from Iceland for £10 on Thursday as I had a Nigel Slater recipe I wanted to try. (God, I love that man!) I covered it in a paste of sea salt crushed with a whole head of garlic, rosemary, thyme and olive oil then basted it in 250ml of water, covered in foil and cooked for 3.5 hours at 160. Teamed with Parmesan mash and honey glazed carrots with the jus from the meat was a huge hit with the family. There's enough lamb to do Nigel's leftover recipe which is lamb & Parmesan potato croquettes and possibly even a lamb casserole on Monday so the initial outlay of £10 has provided 12 meals so I'm pleased with that. Will need more spuds tomorrow and a few other bits but I seem to be doing ok budget wise this month given the spends so far included a party for 18 guests and booze which we never normally buy. I'm doing the Macmillan coffee morning on the 27th which I hadn't budgeted for but still hope to come in under budget but if not it's for a good cause x

  • When you talk about NSDs on here? Are you all saying a NSD in total or just NSD on groceries? Ive had a few but not counted them this month, I will start to keep track next month.
  • Is it too late for me to be put down for £300 for September please. I haven't posted for a while but i have still been keeping a running total. So far i have spent £167.03.I will have to pop out later to get some bits and pieces. I haven't done a proper shop this week.

I generally mean just on groceries. To be honest, most of my spending always goes on food, so a NSD normally means no food shopping anyway.

    Morning all :)

Another Grocery NSD here today. Cant see me needing to buy any food until payday on Thursday.
  • Good morning everyone! :)
Still can't update my signature either but I am keeping track of everything so at the moment I'm up to £21.45/£40. Just slightly over budget but it should even itself out again as I'm going to try to not buy anything until I've used up lots more stuff! I'm even going to resist going into town today to check out the reduced sections as I really don't NEED anything apart from milk - which can even wait until tomorrow. Fingers crossed for a cheap week!!! :j

WOW £40 budget, I am impressed. How many are you feeding? Do you post your meals plans? I will be looking out as hoping to get some good tips :)

  • Spent so much this week as DD was off to uni and we bought her a heap of stuff to start her off. I admit I have lost count ( as per usual:o) so am not sure of my spends but I am still in budget I think and will keep an eye for this week then we're away on our hols.
Oh is picking us up a chicken, potatoes and coconut for todays cooking- Roast chicken dinner with veg from garden and I'm baking a coconut and orange cake so we've got something sweet to eat over the next few days.
I have split peas in soak to make a Split Pea Soup in SC for dinner tomorrow night and have a Lentil Bol in freezer to defrost for tuesday. Will make a stirfry with LO roast chicken too.
