Immersion heater at new flat

Hi guys,

Just moved into a new flat (Renting) and i've discovered that im on Economy 7, with what appears to be an immersion heater.

I've taken pictures of the heating system I have, so that its easier to understand what I'm talking about.

My estate agents and landlords are terrible and its easier to ask on here than try to get them to explain what the best way to use all this is.

If i switch on the "Hot Water" switch i assume the immersion comes on as I am able to use hot water, leaving it off means that the hot water runs out after a day/day and a half and doesn't come back, so that must be the immersion. No idea if i'm supposed to leave the switch on all of the time or just a few hours each day

I'm assuming the boiler above it is for the heating only? I changed the programmer panel to "On" and the radiators came on.

Also the black opening pictured is dripping and it says that I need to reduce the air gap in the tank if that happens, the instructions are also pictured but i've no idea which each of the taps/valves mentioned are! If you think you can help, perhaps I can PM you a link to the photos.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Matthew & espresso,

    - pressurised electric piped-water central heating
    - see here for operation of pressure releif / reducing
    - landlord should / must do an annual service on these pressure based systems
    - air gap replenish here

It's a good system, but boy expensive to buy - install - run & maintain

    - best of luck

It is not a "pressurised electric piped-water central heating" system!

The gas boiler located directly above the Megaflo is used to maintain the temperature of the heatstore normally and the immersion heater is fitted as a backup.

There are two isolated heat transfer coils inside the heatstore cylinder, one for the central heating and the other for mains pressure hot water.

Normally the gas system boiler provides the heat input to the Megaflo, so they are not expensive to run during summer or winter.

    HiYa espresso,

    - what gas ?

Yes it is an electric boiler, I did not look at all of the pictures previously.

The Aztec Gold is only rated at 2kW NOT 9kW. This is obvious when you look at the cabling to the bottom of the boiler from the main boiler switch/programmer which is incapable of supplying 9kW.

Anyway the Megaflow heatstore should get it's heat input from the boiler above and not the backup immersion heater which is labelled "water heater" in the pictures.

So rated at only 2kW it should not be expensive to run if used as intended!

    HiYa espresso,

    - its a 'system' not a stand alone
    - they run from 6-12kW
    - wet rads flow rate supply of around 10 litres a min
    - they have a 3 bar safety valve on the pressurised one
    - and the one in his pic has a PRV overflow so its pressurised

Where did you get the 2kW "Aztec Gold" from ? they are only half the hight of a normal install and that looks full size. I've downed the pics and can see no reference to kW size but all the 'system' boilers all need a service supply of 100A / phase.
