Costs £5 (which you can pay via a PAYG Mobile Phone), and is free to top up at Orange shops.
@Bedsit Bob do you know it your prepay reports to the CRA's otherwise it might be a waste of time from my understanding?0

            I don't know, but it'd be worth finding out.0

Prepaid cards don't report to credit reference agencies so are an absolute waste of time in terms of credit building.
If you take out a cash plus gold you can ask them to charge you £5 a month for the privelage of having their card. They lend you £60 (a years worth of fees) and you pay them back at £5 a month. This shows up as a fixed term loan agreement.
There is no need to spend £60 however as sub prime credit cards do a better job for free.Cashback Earned ¦ Nectar Points £68 ¦ Natoinwide Select £62 ¦ Aqua Reward £100 ¦ Amex Platinum £48

It seems with the excellent advice provided I have already taken a step forward.
2 weeks ago I tried to get a iPhone phone on O2 but was onlky offered a contract if I paid £600 in advance.
Carphonewarehouse called today saying they could get me a phone and came back saying O2 now wanted a £150 advance against the bill......0

A word of warning, first of all "prepaid credit card" is an oxymoron, and there's only one I know of which does report to credit files, which is the cashplus prepaid card. If you search around the forum you will find threads detailing people's nightmare trying to use it, so I'd steer well clear.
Apparently people with horrendous credit files can still get a very low level SIM only contract, which is a good place to start, as is a bottom of the line credit card. The companies you'll have to deal with aren't exactly favourable but you can limit your dealings with them.Oh, you wee bazza!0
