I used to convert my vinyl off a Technics SL1200 with a standard Stanton 500AL stylus running through a KAM mixer, and only got satisfactory results, and that was almost £400 worth of kit....

I had one for a while - I think it was an ION; I got it free. I passed it on because I didn't have a place to put it.

I was quite surprised with how good the sound was through my Naim amp.

Agree that the cheap USB turntables are just that - cheap - and are never going to sound particularly good. There are some ok ones about (as a primarily a decent turntable with the added convenience of USB output for conversion)

I have a ProJect Debut III, has pre-amp and USB output; does the job and sounds decent enough given that it's not a particularly budget-breaking turntable (as far as audio stuff goes!). I've had it for quite a few years and there are newer versions of it now, so probably eBay would be the place to look (however worth double-checking the details because not all have the USB output IIRC)
