Estate agents, anyone else experienced this??

Hi all

Right I went to view a house today and the estate agent was blocking a neighbours car so he came out and asked him to move it, the guy then said to the estate agent, oh is this for sale how much is it and can I go in and have a look now

Well I was fuming cos I was inside viewing it and thought it was really rude the EA had said yeah go in when I was in looking. It made me feel really awkward and I was annoyed because I felt I couldn't ask certain questions in case it gave the other guy an advantage (like viewings, biddings etc)

I have a good right mind of complaining in the morning but I really like the house and want to bid but just feel I've had to wait 5 days to view and he just swanned in.

Anyone else experienced this??? X

  • I can't work out if the agent is just carp or playing a game getting someone in to fein interest. Has it been on long? Maybe say you are interested in making an offer but you need a second viewing as didn't get a proper one first time, explaining what happened. Is very bizarre behaviour, but probably not worth falling out with them if you want the house.

I think you might be being a little sensitive. EAs have a habit of putting viewings together, I have frequently looked at houses with other people there. EAs like to think it makes it seem like the property is in demand, it also means they can use their viewing staff more effectively.

I would have had a chat with the neighbour, lots of excellent information about the neighbourhood to find there.

EA's job is to find a buyer for the house.

He can do it however he wants.

As Ognum says, you should always talk tothe neighbour's anyway once you've decided youlike a place, so this could save you some time.

Before you do that, what do you feel a complaint would actually achieve?
Other than damaging the relationship you have with the EA?

If I were you I would write it off and move on. Really not a big deal in the scheme of things.

Well at least you've been forewarned that the neighbour is a selfish/pushy sort of person.

I've had a passerby couple having the nerve to butt in on my vendor-conducted viewing one time. I was just being shown in and they interrupted and asked if they could come in too and the vendor let them.

That told me all I needed to know about the vendor. The rude couple that butted-in took over my viewing, but by that time I had made some very unkind mental notes about the vendor to myself for letting them and it had put me off the place.

I'd ring the EA and have it noted that, for future reference, you expected NOT to have unwanted company at your viewings (unless it was a specific Open House event). It's fair practice to schedule back-to-back viewings by an EA, but not simultaneous ones, and the EA should have made an appointment with this neighbour for some other time (eg immediately after your viewing if possible). As the vendor I would have been annoyed that my EA hadn't put his exclusive focus on each viewer as they came (ie to monitor the safety of my possessions and to pick up whatever clues they could about the viewer and try to "sell" the house to them).
  • To confirm what's already been said, EA's need to manage their time as effectively and economically as possible. We're viewing a property today - when we rang the EA we were told that they were at the premises for two other viewings and we could go afterwards. Why would the EA make three separate trips to the same property when one would do?

A potential buyer not making an appointment and gate crashing another viewing is another matter however and in my opinion plain bad manners on both their part and the part of the EA.

    how rude,
the neighbour should have been told , if he was interested in buying the house , to book a viewing, same as the OP had to.

EA never cease to amaze me, is it part of the job discription to be arrogant and rude , the last house we viewed, the EA after 10 mins kept looking at his watch, he rushed us round the house and left us looking round the garden, wouldn't have minded if he had apologised and give us an explanation ,

Don't think it's rude or arrogant EA has his job to do and that is sell the house, if you were the seller you would be happy you had an extra viewing.

I have had several people around at the same time in houses I have been selling and buying it does not have to be an exclusive thing.

Letting agents often show several people a property at the same time as well!

Actually it's interesting to listen to the answers other are given!
