Inconsiderate lorry drivers

Perhaps this should be in the vent section!
Just had a couple of weeks away and still am upset by a lorry driver whilst on the A57 going to Manchester airport.
This road has two lanes heading west for well over a mile. At the junction of the A6018 the right lane becomes right turn only, with no warning. So straight on traffic has to be in the left lane, we were in the right lane, first time using this road so indicated to merge into the left, the lorry behind us in that lane immediately revved up and closed the gap!
The lights were red so he stopped with several cars in front of him and when the lights changed a gap opened up in front of him, fully loaded I think, so I, still indicating pulled into it, I did not cause the lorry to brake, he sounded his horn for a long time and revved hard for a long way after trying to intimidate me!
Well Mr lorry man, maybe you knew in advance that the right lane became right turn only but I did not so please be a bit more considerate!
Reminds me of the accident on the M25 near the A1(M) junction, lorries completely blocked the junction by coming of then going straight over the roundabout, added a good hour to our journey even though our road was completely clear!
So I used to respect the "knights of the road" but no more.

Judging by the number who are totally intolerant of any other road user who inconveniences them?

You should have stopped when there was no opportunity to overtake. That would have !!!!ed on his chips.;)

Meh. it's like all types of vehicle.

Some drivers are good, some are complete !!!!!!.

I had one do similar thing with me, approaching a lane merge I was ahead but stayed in lane to merge with the road. From a ways back he comes up the inside forcing me into the oncoming lane. I should have seen it coming and moved over sharpish, but it's not what you expect of a 40 tonne truck, so the first I knew about it was seeing his cab come flying past.

I had a split second to calculate "lane merging, truck cab next to me, 15 meters of trailer behind it...... ohhhhhhh shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit"

I would say this is the case with the majority of junctions, and as you don't know the area, you should have stayed safely in the left lane instead of trying to race ahead in the right into the unknown.

The trucker probably didn't like you zooming past him and cutting in, he has to put up with a lot of that.

Your thinking of a safe stopping distance and the driver of a 40 ton lorry will be totally different.

After passing your driving test they should let you have a go in a 40 ton lorry to show you how restricted the view is and how long they take to stop.

You should not force other drivers to take action to avoid you. You were in the wrong lane and should have dropped behind the lorry or turned right and then gone back around.

Can you guess i was a lorry driver?

I have never driven a lorry but after spending many hours in them as a passenger and with a very experienced driver I now know to give HGV's a lot of stopping distance, room to manoeuvre and expect them to pull out when they are approaching the lorry in front.

I think it is something that needs to be taught when having lessons.

Since a lot of lorries only leave about 20ft between themselves and the lorry in front when travelling at 50MPH then that gives some indication of what a lorry driver thinks the stopping distance of a 40ton artic is.

Probably the same lorry driver (well, probably not but you know what I mean!) that was in the left lane of the twin-lane road going from M56 to M6 the other week. I was in the right lane going past him, when he decided to move across slightly into my lane to avoid a pothole. Where was I meant to go? Into the next lane to my right, which was full of traffic coming the opposite way? (no central reservation) No consideration.

Yes there's thousands of inconsiderate twerps in lorries..... and in cars and in vans and on bikes and on foot, they reflect the me me me attitude that has infected this country like a cancer.

The bloke in the new dark blue 3 series BMW deserves mention, approaching the Milton Keynes turn off Northbound like he obviously does every morning in the outside lane, then picks on a clean presentable lorry who keeps a good safe braking distance who's in the middle lane, pulls in front of him then when a convenient moment presents stops dead in the middle lane till he can force his way in to the stationary left hand lane at the end of the slip road...he'll last about a year i reckon before he gets crushed when he picks on the wrong one, trying it with Johnny Foreigner will speed up the end chap..

The blue Polo driver at Northampton i doubt will see the summer out, some of the most reckless driving i have seen for a long long time, undertaking at least +30mph faster then the prevailing traffic then sweep across all three lanes forcing others to avoid him, rinse and repeat to get back in the inisde lane for the Bedford Road turn off.

Hopefully in both cases they'll just take themsleves out and not force an otherwise innocent driver to take evasive action (Polo boy gets gold medal for boy racer plonker) causing others to get hurt.

Annoys me a lot when i see lorry steering wheel attendants acting like the little boy racers and aggressive clever dicks in their company cars, but they pale into the realms of choir boys when blondes get behind the wheel, especially if they have a Little Princess on Board sticker.

There that enough generalisations for you.

You should get more sympathy for your complaint about lorry drivers if you post on a cycling warrior forum.

By the way some Knights of the Road live on, though getting rarer by the day, and still to blame.
