got a bit lost reading this as lots of these posts have no relevance to me. I will write an appeal letter and let you know how I get on. Thanks for your help and support so far0

Do this:Send a soft appeal to ParkingLies, lots of examples on this forum, doesn't really matter what it says 'cos they'll reject it anyway. The crucial thing is not to mention who was driving, write in the third person as "The Keeper". Look around, you'll see how to do it.
When they reject it they will send you a code for appealing to PoPLA. In the meantime read the forum and look for PoPLA appeals so you've got some idea what to write. We'll help you when the time comes, DO NOT DO IT ON YOUR OWN, as you might miss the crucial points that always win.
Doesn't have to be a soft appeal (short) could be a longer one showing them you mean business. Someone saw off UKCPS with a strong first appeal and we know Parking Eye are struggling to cope with appeals:
http://forums.pepipoo.com/index.php?showtopic=79697&st=0
but here's a thread talking about soft/short appeals, with links to examples:
http://forums.pepipoo.com/index.php?showtopic=80125&st=20&start=20
and here's a very recent post from Guys Dad suggesting grounds that should certainly be in even the shortest first challenge, in order to extract a POPLA code:

Either way you will be wanting a POPLA code if they do not cancel the fake PCN, and either way you must write in the third person as the 'keeper' NOT implying who was driving (as you will see from the linked examples, write about 'the driver' in the third person).
HTHPRIVATE 'PCN'? DON'T PAY BUT DON'T IGNORE IT (except N.Ireland).
