Meet The Landlord Documentary

Can be watched on iplayer http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b0377w72/Meet_the_Landlords/

I don't think I dare comment on the Landlords - or most of the tenants.

It does illustrate some of the problems with being a landlord and tenant and I think should be mandatory watching for Landlords to be.., I just hope they don't pick up hints and tips from the HMODaddy. I'm sorry, I've got to say it.., how he could say the rooms he rents out were 'very nice' before yet another tenant wrecked yet another tiny horrible bedsit room I don't know.., not sure what planet he's living on. Unfortunately, they were exactly like the mice infested, unsafe bedsit I had to live in for three months with two children. I slept on the floor and I was lucky to get that (seriously).

They did show a very good positive scheme (seemed to be a LA with social housing tendancies), with decent housing on offer. Wish there were more of them around.

Oh well.., onwards and upwards

Yes I agree.., it was like watching some of the posts from new landlords on here only on video.., both of the ladies who'd had non paying tenants for well over 6 months before doing anything at all about it (legally). And obviously not researching their tenants.

But I have to say.., none of the tenants in bedsit rooms were young. However they obviously did have social/mental health problems. I suspect that the majority of 'young' tenants have very real reasons for leaving home. I was one of them lolol.

Seemed to me some of the worst behaviour was by the Council... Advising HB Tenants to play the game until the bailiffs arrive is one of the main reasons for LL taking the "no DSS" attitude.

    like "wanting to" you mean.

    I don't think that's a good enough reason

They need to build more houses. Good quality houses with gas central heating.

I haven't seen the programme (yet) but this isn't the councils' fault, it's a diktat from central government from when Rooker was Housing Minister. Our council used to accept a copy of the two months notice and would then start finding alternative accommodation, but they were told not to do this and wait until the court proceedings. Therefore councils tell tenants not to leave until the court proceedings, and that if they leave before that point they will be considered as having made themselves intentionally homeless and therefore the council will have no obligation to find alternative housing for them. This means that one day a week court time is needlessly tied up dealing with landlord-tenant proceedings, which previously would have been dealt with via common sense.
    IANAL etc.

    your claim was "the majority"

My wife is a landlord, she doesn't take DSS but they are the conditions of her mortgage, no problem tenants so far but her current tenant has been in the house for a very long time. If/when her current tenant leaves we will meet prospective new tenants in person and check everything ourselves as she doesn't risk leaving it all to the EA and wishes to check everything in person.

I might give that a watch actually.

    Who are the 'they'?

In my area it was the local council that was the slum landlord.

Though given LA's propensity to issue S21s when they have absolutely no intention to proceed to evicting the tenant, there does need to be further system in place than just relying on the S21
