Jerrycans at Tesco petrol stations

I thought that I had got this sorted out a year ago when I was challenged for filling 4 jerry cans to maximise my savings on a 5p a litre off deal .
Several emails with tesco customer service apparently got their "policy" changed from only allowing two jerry cans to be filled to basically not questioning.
I believe that there is still no law restricting the number of jerry cans you can fill and transport in your car, although there is one about storage of petrol.
However, I was challenged again today and this time got the following reply from Tesco Customer Services.( typo's and grammatical errors are theirs not mine)

To investigate this further, I have called the store and spoke with Victoria, the Petrol Station Manager, who advised that they received a communication from our Petrol Station Operations Manager week commencing 3rd June 2013 stating that only 2 jerry cans will be accepted at our Petrol Station.
I appreciate there is no law on this matter and our policy was different previously, however unfortunately we have now changed our policy and you will only be able to fill 2 jerry cans in future.
This communication would have been sent to all out Tesco Stores to ensure we are consitent.
I am sorry for the disappointment this may caused and thank you for taking the time to contact us and if I can be of further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Kind regards
Sarah-Jayne Moynihan

Whether or not it is legal to transport the fuel, surely Tesco are entitled to adopt any such policy that they want, particularly in relation to a money off offer?

Also, I don't think I'd be too impressed if I was waiting in a queue at a fuel station while someone filled up a row of jerry cans...

Their shop, their policy. No shop is compelled to sell anything, any quantity, or at any price that they don't want to.

If you don't like it, buy elsewhere!

How many containers can I fill at a petrol station?

Petrol filling stations may have their own internal policy on the types and numbers of containers they are prepared to fill - frequently one or two 5 litre plastic and/or one or two 10 litre metal. This is a decision made by the filling station operator and is not a legal requirement.
Petrol filling stations usually have to abide by a licence condition to allow only 'suitable' containers to be filled. This is usually interpreted as metal containers up to a maximum size of 23 litres or plastic containers up to a maximum size of 5 litres. A licence condition has the same effect as a legal requirement. The licence condition does not limit how many containers one customer may fill.

I spotted a guy filling cans in the boot of his little hatchback. I thought maybe he has a lot of lawnmovers or something.

Got home and it clicked. Budget tomorrow.

Fuel actually went down 1p the next day. I bet he cried himself to sleep. The boot stinks of petrol, he has to safely store 20L of fuel somewhere because his insurance possibly wont be valid if the house burns down.

Why not go the whole hog. Fit a 50 gallon drum to the rear of your car, then you can fill that and flog it to your neighbours.

Drive off without paying to maximise profits.

I think the OP needs to seriously think about PX'ing his car for one of these
