I've always fancied visiting York and I have now got 3 of my friends to agree to go up for the weekend. However as none of us have ever been before we're not to sure what will be there for us to do.
Any help would be appreciated.

Betty's tea room is great but there is usually a bit of queue to get in, but it is worth it!0

Might this give you a few ideas ....

Railway Museum
A brace of other museums and stately homes in the area
York Minster
Bus and Boat Tours
Maybe a show at The Opera House?
Food-wise, I could recommend
The Lime House (British)
Fiesta Latina (Mexican)
El Gaucho Steakhouse (Argentinian)
The chain restaurants that I tried (Zizzi, Prezzo) I found were quite acceptable, too ...0 -
The York Wheel, this took me on the ride of my life in a gale. I thought it was going to blow over!.
The boat trips are nice, the York Dungeon is actually quite a laugh.
I dont know about the railway museum for a group of 50 something women. It would bore me.
Lots of nice shops, as well as the Shambles, Theres a nice market with some local produce. Theres a bike place next to the train station, you could all rent a bike and have a ride round the city.
Also theres the Walls that you could have a walk round.
If you cant be bothered with all that you can always spend the day at Yates's. Theres also a o.k pub under the main bridge next to the river, you can sit outside and dangle your legs over the wall above the river.
Food tends to be overpriced and if your going for the day and are not wanting to spend loads then I would recommend taking a packed lunch and your own soft drinks/water if your walking round.( I'd still recommend this if your going for 2 days).0 -
I'm a forty something woman and really enjoyed the railway museum

Jorvik centre was interesting, but make sure it's not school trip time when you go or the queue might be hideous ( though they have a viking patrolling the queue looking for trouble, lol)Member of the first Mortgage Free in 3 challenge, no.19

Yorvikcentre is a total rip off.
A must is going for a walk down the Shambles.
The museum is a must too.....make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -

As a 40 year old we did Betty's for breakfast and was very yummy. Also less busy than afternoon tea. Lots of wonderful shopping to do! Plus York Museum is good and enjoyable. There is also York Minster itself to see. We liked a large antique shop on the street/ lane which the smaller Betty's is on (lane leading between main Betty's and York Minister) it also has a lovely little cafe on the top floor. For food we went to an Italian in the old school building and found it reasonable and very good.
Enjoy whatever you do0 -

Thanks! This does sound like it would suit our group!0 -
Whenever I go to York with my Mum we just tend to spend the day walking around lovely streets and having a nosey in all the shops (found a Christmas shop last time I was there which was fun to walk about in the Summer!) We then just tend to find somewhere to have a drink and some lunch. There are loads of restaurants that look really nice but as I'm usually just there for the day I've never gotten to try them.0
