I'm a student that just finished renting a property last month and we've held an inventory check with the landlord's parents due to him being away at the moment.
As I talked with the lady alone while the husband did the checks, she remarked how clean the property was and how much better it looked compared to the previous tenants. However the husband remarked how we left the in disrepair and how he will have to charge a large amount from my deposit. However the thing is that when we entered the property, there wasn't a proper inventory check given, only a checklist with the furniture inside already left in a broken state.
Now I wonder if it's possible for me to return to the property using a spare key in order to repair and fix the few things that are broken and to ensure that I won't be charged the full amount?

I doubt returning to the property after your tenancy has finished is a good idea .. probably a criminal offence.
If there is no proper inventory then the deposit protection scheme is unlikely to side with the LL - he must have evidence of the condiiton of the flat at the time your tenancy started.
PErhaps you could give more detail about the 'check list' and whether it contained details, was dated, was signed by you.0 -
Contact the DPS people and ask for your full deposit back asap
Did you find the property Via the University accom office or a Letting agent ?
Inform the Landlord that if you do not receive your full deposit back you will sue him Via the small claims court.
Without a full dual signed check in inventory with Photos or better still Video the Landlord can not prove the state of the property when you moved in.0 -
Deposit claims come down to proof, and as the LL here does not seem to have thorough written evidence of the start condition, he will have difficulty proving the end condition is any different.
DO NOT re-enter the property - if your tenancy has formally ended, you have no right to go back, and indeed, should no longer have a key anyway.
Is deposit protected? Contact the relevant scheme to request release of the deposit, and LL will have to contest your claim and prove their deductions.0 -
I have contacted DPS and asked for my deposit back, hopefully I shall receive an answer soon from my landlord.0
