Need help with new desktop purchase

It looks like my current pc is dead to the world so I'll be needing a new one.
I have no technical skills what so ever so would appreciate a little advice.

what I want my pc to do/what I do with a pc:

download about 100-150 music tracks a month (not always this many)
watch video on youtube and similar
store digital photos
burn audio discs
play pc games (such as medal of honor), but not a big gamer
produce word documents now and then

i've had a quick look round ebuyer/misco/dell websites but to be honest, all the spec jargon means nothing to me.

i don't have a massive budget (if any at all really, just can't live without a pc) so nothing high-end and fancy!

Thanks in advance :)

Don't give up on your current machine until you at least find out what is wrong with it. It may be something quite simple to fix i.e. a new power supply for say £20. Post more details and you should get some help i.e. does it do anything at all, lights fans etc.

this morning the fan was making a noise like it had over-heated and was going bananas.
i think the pc had been left on all night, not sure.

i tried switching it off but nothing was happening. the light that goes green round the on button when it's all on and ok was flickering orange.

had to go to work so left it. had a look at lunch and all is silent now. pulled all the plugs out and put them in again (yes, this really is the level of my expertise!) and still nothing.

i'm out of ideas now! i know i sound dumb, sorry :D

a flashing power light often indicate windows is hibernating (on my machine anyway), just press the power button and it should come back on

If you have pull the mains lead out, it sounds like a power supply issue, ebuyer etc. sell them for a fiver. But I would check the plug fuse first.
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?

Yes that should do the job for most standard PC's. see here for a guide to fitting.

It's not like your doing any actual wiring. Just plugging things into sockets and with PSU plugs, very unlikely you could plug anything to the wrong connector. I'm sure you remember doing the same thing as a child, "round peg in round hole, square peg in square hole". Not much more advanced than that. :)
