Got 76meg Sky Fibre and WiFi? Save a tenner and downgrade cos the router is pants

I'm fed up with TalkTalk (don't get me started!) and have been researching Fibre broadband. Sky seemed like a decent enough deal, especially if you have a TV package, until I found this story today:

http://www.trustedreviews.com/news/sky-short-changing-customers-sky-hub-too-slow-for-fastest-fibre-broadband-connections

It seems that if you go for the 76Mb package, you will get that speed to your router, but the wireless inside the box is too rubbish to keep up and you won't get everything you've paid for. You might as well save a tenner and get the 38Mb deal for £20 a month. :money:

If you want the full monty speed you have to drop at least another hundred quid on a decent dualband wifi router that can handle the full speed.

Anyone here got BT Infinity? Can you get the full speed over wifi?

I am on Plusnet FTTP Fibre trial, connected Ethernet to my desktop I get 76Mbps download and 20Mbps upload, wireless on my laptop using my own Netgear DGND3700v2 dual band router I get nearly the same speeds on 2.4Ghz channels and 65Mbps download 18Mbps upload on 5Ghz channels.

The other option is to run a network cable if you really need the speed.

Unfortunately even a top brand expensive router can struggle to give you 70+mb on the wireless unless you're in the same room*, let alone if you live somewhere with a lot of neighbours with wireless connection.

Wireless is generally great for ease of mobile use, but not renowned for actually being great for performance.

*The adaptor in your laptop also needs to be pretty good.

Yep, The_Pope has made the assumption that everyone is wireless. You're paying for UP TO 80mb (BT calls this Infinity 2) rather than the 40mb that BT calls Infinity 1.
If you've got a 'G' WiFi laptop, the absolute best you'll get (and you won't get it) is 54mbps. 'N' gets faster, but is also more robust, working better at a similar distance.
