I've always thought that East Midlands is an odd name for an airport. Do people overseas look at airline routes and say "Hey. Let's go to the East Midlands for a weekend break!"
I think it is named to keep people away so we don't get too many of them in our beautiful countryside.0 -

Exactly.
OP
I did actually mean:
'Can you fly non-stop from EMA to Buenos Aires?'
(as I think you knew)
Rather than risk the connection, I'd still prefer to book a non-stop flight - even if it meant leaving more time to get to the airport or even staying overnight.0 -

The difference is that if you have a ticket for the entire journey then if you miss the connection it is the airline's problem, rather than yours.
There are plenty of major destinations that cannot be reached by non-stop (or even direct) flights from London: Addis Ababa, diplomatic capital of Africa, springs to mind. I doubt very much whether there are any direct flights to BA, but in any case that is not an issue.0 -

No wonder you're so gloomy -it's all those speeding tickets you getI Would Rather Climb A Mountain Than Crawl Into A Hole

I rather like flying non direct - as said above if the connection fails it's the airline's responsibility to get you there anyway (obviously all on one ticket)- plus I often use a transit point to explore a new city or just stop off for a few hours (usually a transit can be up to 23 hours and 59 mins). Indirect is usually cheaper too.
I always leave stupid early for a flight too- and build in delay time. The other side of not having a tight schedule is if a flight is overbooked it can be very MSE to accept the airline's offer to fly on a later/other connection and get several hundred pounds in vouchers for the next trip with that airline.
Next trip we're using Dublin as a departure airport (I live in Kent) as due to the airport tax difference it's well worth it. Route is (seperate) ticket Gatwick Dublin in the am - then start the transatlantic ticket late that evening Dublin back to Gatwick (pick up luggage left in Gatwick left luggage) stay at Yotel for £40 and then fly to the US the next morning-saving £200 pp even after allowing for the hotel and Ryanair cheapie. We both love Dublin so it's hardly a hardship to have a day there before heading to the US. One wonders, then, why the OP decided to travel 160-odd miles to Gatwick when he has an airport on his doorstep.Voyager2002 wrote: »There are plenty of major destinations that cannot be reached by non-stop (or even direct) flights from London: Addis Ababa, diplomatic capital of Africa, springs to mind. Don't BA fly non-stop to Buenos Aires?
I don't think non-stop or direct flights to Addis Ababa is an issue either. :cool:0 -

:
Cost ...in both cases.
Take a look at the BA direct fare to Buenos Aires versus indirect on any of the flight comparison sites and you'll have your answer.I Would Rather Climb A Mountain Than Crawl Into A Hole

In this case it might have been cheaper for the OP to have booked a connecting flight from EMA instead of having a wasted 5 hour journey and the cost of another ticket - and also possibly the cost of hotel accommodation near the airport as another flight was booked for the following day.0 -
Unfortunately midlands/North West airports even Manchester and Birmingham no longer have decent connecting flights if at all. You can easily get to Heathrow but not Gatwick.0

Don't bank on that either. We had a Ryanair flight from EMA and got to bag drop 2 hours before departure time inline with RA advice and only just made the plane before they closed the door. 10 other pax got left behind.
Was the delay down to the security ?
What time of day was that ?
Last time I flew from EMA, the queue was massive (but was there well before the flight) but that was a while ago.
Due to fly from there on Sunday morning about 7am“That old law about 'an eye for an eye' leaves everybody blind. The time is always right to do the right thing.”0
