Options
You know this new law making landlords be imigration officers ??? I let out a family property in a northern town its let at the moment but next time if this law is in place will I be able to ask a tenant to take off their head gear? There are lots of women head to foot and could be prince charles under there for all I know ,I supose it would not matter being a woman but if I wasn't here and hubby had to ask ??? or is the best thing to avoid the problem altogether.

Thanks

  • At a guess, OP needs to check that the photo on their passport matches their appearance.

Now that brings up the thought as to just what photo a woman in a burka would put on her passport before seeking to come and live here anyway....and I don't actually know the answer to that one but, as I have to have a proper photo on my passport (even though I am British) then I assume the same would apply to a foreign national wishing to come into Britain (otherwise we would be the ones being discriminated against in our own country).

Same rule would still apply. After all, even if they have asked for and got British Nationality status, if they require a passport then they would have to follow our rules.

That's not to mention that newer driving licences have to have a photo on them.

  • Sounds like a good argument there for an Identity Card to be carried by everyone ........(with a photo on).

We might as blimmin' well have such a Card these days anyway, by the time we have to produce all sorts just to open a bank account/buy a house/etc.

There is no good argument for identity cards that can not be overruled by correct immigration controls,
    Be happy...;)

Actually, it had never occurred to me before now just what one of the more "subtle" reasons might be behind people arguing against Identity Cards (duh...naïve...slap head smilie).

Can't say I'm charmed with the thought of them myself, but I am coming to think they are indeed necessary.

I wouldn't be charmed either at having to check someone was entitled to it before I gave them a job/housing/whatever - but I have a strong suspicion that I inadvertently got taken for a ride in providing lodgings to someone who wasn't entitled to them (well they certainly turned out not to be the student they had told me they were....lying little ***). So, I would have appreciated knowing that there was some definite way available to me and a document or whatever I had to ask for before agreeing the tenancy. I really don't think that person would have been able to provide it and I then would have told them "Room unavailable".
  • Women who wear niqab (face veil) are used to 'flipping' so their identity can be checked against their ID (passport or driving licence). It is not necessary to ask them to remove their headscarf or any other clothing! A burqa as I understand it is the light blue outfit worn by women in some parts of Afghanistan and I have never seen anyone wearing that in the UK!

I think sometimes people are a bit too embarrassed to ask a woman to 'flip' her niqab but as long as it's for a genuine reason (for example in the supermarket when buying painkillers) then you shouldn't feel that way :)
