Iphone 4 sound not working

This maybe a bit long but I would like some opinions please.

In June last year I upgraded my Iphone 3G to a 4, after 2 months the sound stopped working completely, I took it to the nearest Apple shop and they replaced it, at the time I don't remember signing for anything. Had no problems with it until last week when I woke up in the morning and realised that it had happened again, however this time it was slightly different, I could play the radio by putting it on an Iphone dock but not the music stored on my phone, if someone called me it would ring as normal but I couldn't adjust the volume with the buttons.

I duly made an appointment with Apple on Thursday, I explained the problem and the assistant took it away and came back and said that some of the pins were damaged, not sure how this could have happened, he then said it could be replaced but at a cost of £130 as the warranty had run out.

I was not impressed as I have only had the phone since September but the assistant said that the warranty started when I got the original phone and was just carried over to the new one, how is this possible, surely the warranty was on the original phone not the one I have now. When I asked him why it would play the radio and not stored music he said its different pins also how would this affect the volume buttons.

Since then it has worked intermittantly, I'm really not happy as I'm not due an upgrade for another year and can't afford the repair charges but I'm stuck with a phone that doesn't work properly, surely Apple could do better than this.

My memory thinks Apple replacement items are warrantied for 3 months or the duration of the original warranty whichever is the longer, so you warranty expired June ish.

Damaged pins on the dock connector are most likely the result of user damage, either excessive force or using an item with a damaged dock connector.

The 4 Does not have the a radio built in so the dock connector is probably only supplying power to the phone and access to the App not transferring music.

Best advice go talk to a local phone repairer we had a very similar issue, and it cost £35 to replace the dock connector on the phone.

Thanks for the information, I'm sure I'll be able to find a repair shop nearby.
I still think Apple are crafty with the warranty issue though, anything else I've ever bought, if its replaced under the first warranty a new one starts with the new item, got three brand new microwaves that way, and they were upgraded each time lol

Did you return the faulty microwaves to the retailer or the manufacturer? I'm asking because there is a difference between Sale of Goods Act and warranties.

Have you backed up the phone with itunes and reinstalled the iOS ?

Could just as easy be a software issue, having a quick look at pins (i hope you looked at them before and after he 'took away' your phone, is not a full inspection, it reasonably could be something internal. Apple seem to by pass the Sale of Goods Act when they can, all for a fee for a reburbished/new phone, to me its a scam. For user damage yes its great but for warranty issue, very poor.

Try the software reload then a local repairer.

Quite a common fault. Strangely enough its a dock connector problem. Its likely that there is a short in the docking pins. This fault is commonly caused by using cheap cables or forcing cables in/drop whilst connected etc.

You may be able to fix this though. Let the phone run down in power until it switches off. Recharge using an original cable and plug. It might start working again! Odd as this sounds, it does work surprisingly often.

If not then you need to change the docking port. Plenty of repair people offer this service. Expect to pay £30. If you have any kind of techy skills, it takes about 30 mins to do. The part costs about a fiver.
