I didn't like AC3 either - didn't feel like a AC game really. I didn't like connor and it seemed to be all native American themed rather than assassin themed.
Black flag was much better but still too heavily pirate themed imo and far too many tailing missions. Don't get me wrong, I like the whole sea fights (spent hours taking on anything as big and bag as possible - although haven't tried my hand at legendary ships - has anyone?).
Where did the catacombs go? The long climbs, dangerous jumps and trying to find the right path etc?
It does have days worth of gameplay though (3 maybe 4 for full completion of all collectibles, side missions etc). Much more than you usually get from other games.
They've kept the hunting (from AC3), no sign of assassin initiates though - instead theres kenways fleet. Cant call them in to help but can still do missions with them. With the added bonus (or drawback depending how you look at it) that its tied to your account - so even if you start a new game, you'll still have all your ships/diamonds etc - so handy for getting money for a new character. You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means - Inigo Montoya, The Princess Bride0 -
Oh as for price, I used a discount code from very (£25 off a £50 order) so got AC:BF and another game for less than the price of AC:BF alone anywhere else.
Its a great way to get "new" games at older game prices. You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means - Inigo Montoya, The Princess Bride0 -

As for taking on the legendary, I tried right at the beginning and got nailed within seconds so now waiting until I have built my ship to be as strong as possible...even then I think its gonna be tough!0 -
Warning: possible spoiler in the paragraph starting "That reminds me."
I echo all of those sentiments. AC2 and Brotherhood are the standards by which all of the other AC games are measured, and I miss the catacombs etc. too! There was less mystery to this game, but it was still better than AC3.
I hated the ship stuff to begin with (hated it in AC3 too) until I upgraded my ship, and stopped getting my behind kicked by every little ship in the sea. It got to the point where I was man-o-war huntingand yes, I took on the legendary ships one after the other and they were some epic battles! But I wouldn't take them on until you've upgraded your armour to the max at least, and your broadside cannons.
All in all, I found it much better than AC3, but still wanting in the storyline dept. I think that the characters and the storyline weren't as well-developed or maybe just not as riveting as Ezio or even Altaïr, and it didn't link back to the originals as closely as I would have wanted it to. The whole sage storyline is/was kind of weird, and it feels like it ended just when it was starting to get interesting. They'll probably develop that in a future game, but for now, it's not enough. I also thought the modern-day stuff was a bit annoying....no, a lot annoying. Talking to the French guy and that other lady could have been taken care of in a few cutscenes, following them around was tedious.
Edward continually insisted upon running up random walls and obstacles when I needed to be swift, and ruined many a mission. Grrr. One thing that I'll say AC3 has over AC4 is the fighting. I enjoyed the fighting as Connor; his new, brutal style was fun to experience and took a little more effort than just mashing a single button, though that may have been because it was on the PS3...
And yes, too many tailing missions! Come on, could it be more repetitive?
That reminds me...I haven't gotten a hold of that outfit in the mansion yet, although I'm sure I have all of those keys. And I think I'm just missing a couple of stelae...
I think I might keep playing it til it's 100% complete0 -
I tried to take on the legendary ships about a third of the way through and got totally owned. I tried again near the end, almost cracked it but still not quite there. Need to fully upgraded before I try again.
*possible spoilers*
I agree the present day was a bit tedious but I found it better than AC3 present day. Enjoyed the hacking, listening to old archives and finding out what happened to what was left of Desmond.
Was it as entertaining as Ezio? No way.
But playing through on the day after release, walking into the Abstergo Entertainment lobby and seeing Shaun and Rebecca; I was smiling like a loon. Didn't see it coming at all and loved it.
Again with the flash to present day and the Sage staring me in the face, genuinely scared me a bit (maybe I'm just a wimp?)
I found chasing the shanties the most annoying bit free running wise but I was the same with the almanacs in AC3.
Tailing a ship, in another giant ship is the most infuriating thing I've had to do in a while. Enough said.
I don't think I managed to get all the Stelae to unlock until near the end when everywhere was open, the mansion outfit I got pretty quickly; I'm just impatient. The progress tracker helped to make sure I'd searched everywhere that was open thoroughly.
On slightly different note, I'm SO glad they fixed the programming bug that didn't change your outfit (to match what you had changed/dyed it to) in the cutscenes in AC3. Something that was present in every other game and annoyed the Hell out of me in AC3
I think I'm ok with the 95ish% completion I have, swapping it for GTA5Looking forward to the next one though

Few tips for the shanty chasing....if one way is hard, try approaching from the opposite direction (usually always find theres one easy peasy way). 2nd tip...if you want to be lazy, you can just wait for it to respawn - usually takes a minute at most. And you can sit right on its spawn location for most of them (some its impossible if its above water between 2 posts for example) but you just sit facing the spawn with finger on freerun and the second it spawns, hit the stick to move towards it.
I did love the graphics/scenery though. Particularly the oceans. And I find myself singing the shanties every so often (so catchy!).You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means - Inigo Montoya, The Princess Bride0 -
SPOILER ALERT
I'm done, 91% completion:
All legendary ships beaten
All templar keys done (really annoyed there wasn't any achievement points for this!)
All Assassins missions done
All Naval missions done
All areas cleaned of collectibles
All Mayan stones collected
The only things I haven't done are 100% on all missions (you really have to be dedicated to do this!), found all treasure chests (done 10, 12 missing), upgraded the jackdaw fully.
Overall....I'm happy and will now sell it and move onto actually playing my xbox one!
Spoilers:Gutted James Kidd died, gutted his wife died.
I hope they continue Kenway on for one more series and then onto Haytham.
Though, I really want one in Roman times!0
