Instant Mash - thoughts?

My OH makes fishcakes with it with sardines or pink salmon - at least the oily fish is healthy! Actually i think dried mash retains some vitamin C, so it's really not bad.0

Has anyone noticed how quickly potatoes sprout nowadays? My mum always comments on it and I'm sure it's true, compared to the old days. She used to get them covered in earth from a van that came round our estate: maybe there's something in the soil that inhibits sprouting, as opposed to the well-washed hygienic nuked chemically treated **** we get nowadays.
(I know it seems counter-intuitive: surely being in the soil should make them sprout! But if they're in there there's no hurry: if they're exposed to light and warmth then they might dry out and wither soon, so they'd better get sprouting to pass life on to the next generation... Just indulging myself in a spot of anthropomorphism for the day!)0 -

Have to reccommend Asda Smartprice instant mash - 15p per sachet. I have just made a truck load of soup with a packet of this and a leek.
Its also great for thickening soups and stews.

"Then they smash them all to bits ha ha ha..."
I've got to say I've never used it as a replacement for mash, but after reading this I'll consider it.
But I do keep it in for thickening, after Keith Floydd suggested it in one of his programmes (Floyd around the Med I think) as it doesn't flavour the sauce. I find it easier than flour and avoids the floury taste.
