The value Tesco instant mash has less salt in,both have 0.1g sat fat. If you look at the size Value isn't a huge a amount cheaper-Value 250g,31p
    Tesco 424g, 76p.
I've never tasted either-my memory is of the horrid stuff my mum used to make when we went camping in the 70's-but might give it a try as my 2 youngest love mash and I can't always be bothered!

ooh-I have remembered the great adverts for cadbuy's smash with the aliens all lauging 'they peel them with their metal knives-hahahaha!)
Tomorrow is always fresh, with no mistakes in it!

I might try this. OH is keen on homity pie without the pie - basically mash with cheese, garlic and leeks in. Potatoes are very heavy and tend to sprout on us so might give it a go. Not sure OH will be too happy though.

The thing I've noticed about instant mash is the cheap stuff usually needs more salt. Sainsbury's own brand has more than enough salt.

I've given up on proper potatoes because they start sprouting on me, no matter how quickly I try to use them up.

I might revert to smash-type stuff, simply as a convenient and fast thing to russel up when I get home.

Havent used it for years as I have developed my real mash into something so luxurious, comforting and creamy...mmmmm.....

As a teenager, I used to eat the made up Smash with chopped bits of heated up vienna sausage in it.
    I used to love it.
    :D

;) Felines are my favourite ;)
  • Haven't used instant mash for years, but can fully appreciate the appeal of it - lighter to carry home and quick and easy to prepare.

I am banned from making proper mashed potato in our house (once got fed up of mashing it manually, so attacked it with the hand blender...result? Sloppy milky potato slush...:D) OH makes it instead now...

I buy real potatoes for roasties and steamed but also keep in smash and frozen instant mash.

The reason is that if I having salad or such like then rather than cook potatoes I use the smash as it is just for me. I also buy frozen mash as it allows my husband to have something hot at lunch time. The other day for lunch he has left over cold sausages with frozen mash and beans.

He is unable to chop and peel veggies and it is easy for him. Normally we don't have mash but since finding the frozen stuff cheapish then it means we mash as I can't make it without lumps. As lumps make he heave. Morrisons do two bags for a £1 and asda's is 52p a bag. A lot cheaper than aunt bessies. So fits in to my budget.

Whats good enough for Delia is good enough for me ;)

    Yours
