Cold caller - you tell me first...

Ring ring.
Me: Hello.
Caller: Is that Mr Prowla?
Me: Who is calling?
Caller: Am I speaking to Mr Prowla?
Me: Who is that please?
Caller: You tell me first and I will tell you.
Me: You rang me, so you tell me.
Caller: hung up

Sounds like the sort of calls I have when someone I don't recognise asks for me!

We often, at work, get calls for Mrs D....., my MIL. I often answer yes and they just barrel on. They obviously don't care that a male voice answers them. I suppose they have a job to do but they get nowhere.

I never confirm my name and always just reply with "who's calling" and they always ignore me and carry on with their script. I wait for them to finish and ask to be removed from their database. 90% just hang up at that point. 10% apologise and say they will remove me.

I do think that is not unreasonable to ask who is calling, in fact I think companies are obliged to tell you this.

If it is any sort of legitimous business the will of course tell you.

There is no harm in saying you are Mr Prowla to find out who they are and if you are not interested in the product or service I think UK companies are obliged not to call you again if you request to be removed from their list - they can be fined for doing so.

I'm registered with TPS, so UK ones shouldn't be calling me anyway.

I hate it when they do this.

I had a company rang me and asked could I confirm my date of birth and the first line of my address. Asked who they were and they said they couldn't tell me till I confirmed what they asked for.

Needless to say I ended the call there.

I got a call from the DWP, she asked me to confirm my name, address and national insurance number and I said no, she was really put out, but you have to understand, I said, I have no idea who you are, you're just a voice on my phone asking for my information. Had to call them back.

I've noticed that cold callers always gabble their name, if given, I keep asking for their name until its intelligible then say no thanks.
