Question regarding procedure - not requesting medical advice!

Mine is on Friday, so been trying very hard to ignore bad thoughts since I had that letter announcing severe cell changes few weeks ago. I did cry, wrote new will, spent hours on internet reading/researching all possible scenarios, even spent a week on raw food micro diet just to see if I would be able to do that if worst comes. Now Ijust want all of it to be over and no letter from NHS in 5 days after procedure(not sure how much truth is in that, but majority people with bad results got letters in 5 days, where is better results took up to 3 weeks to arrive).
Will update with my experience on Friday afternoon if you are still interested in hearing stories...0 -

I was very much like a smear, although it did make me laugh when I saw the doctor having a look at my cervix with what looked like binoculars! I also had student nurses in there (I don't think there can be many health professionals left in the county who haven't had a poke around in my mini-moo!)
I know the feeling! I have to resist the urge to drop my pants everytime I go into any doctors office these days.
It's interesting how common this is once you start asking. There are plenty of ladies here to support you all - including Lucy and Blueyellowred.
I remember how scary this phase is. You can't stop yourself worrying, no matter the statistics, so let yourself worry as much as you need. It's not crazy to worry, but no matter the result - it is BETTER that you are getting treatment now than not. Basically this, if it's anything, has been found very early, and can be fixed. Finding it now is a GOOD thing0 -
I also had about six students peering down at me when I had my coil removed. They didn't seem to know which part of my body to address their questions to :rotfl:0

in the past 2 years i have had 8 of theese and 2 sigmoidoscopies (very similar to colonoscopy), so the truth................ well everyone is different but the by far the worse part is the cleaning out! generally you will be given some stuff called picolax to drink! it's horrid and to sum it up you know the expresion the bottom has fallen out of your world?? well picolax it;s the other way.. the world falls out of your bottom! stay in the loo for a couple of hours and drink as much water as you can get down yourself, and i mean as much as you can, the quicker you run clear the better it will be for you

you will feel totaly knackered afterwards, go lay down on a towel (it puts your mind at rest
)
thats the bad bit over, you will be asked just before they do the tube if you want sedation, yes you do it dosnt make you sleep but you feel realy nice and relaxed and more to the point your muscle in the important area are relaxed, normally the people that do the test (my surgeon did mine) are great, so dont lay there if you feel some discomfort and say nothing!! TELL them if it isnt comfortable, there is plenty they can and will do if it is starting to hurt (mine never ever lets it get to the hurting stage and my bowel is/was a mess.
you will feel bloated after so before the big day go buy some mint tea and honey, when you get home try and drink 2-3 cups of sweat (honey) mint tea. trust me that first large expulsion of air is a relief you have to experience to understand lol.
advice..... talk to the people during the test ask them to point out any iffy bits they can see, this may realy help later if you need some form of treatment as you can visualize what you are dealing with.
the chances of cancer are slim, chrohns has very bad symptons and they are pretty much identical to cancer before the test (i had/have both) polyps depending on age are pretty likely to be there and are often removed there and then (you feel a slight tug but nothing else).
Good luck and remeber apart from worrying the worse part is having to sit on the loo for ages and wondering if your bum is ever going to forgive you

Thanks Jason, although the OP was about a colposcopy rather than a colonoscopy. A colposcopy is a gynae procedure!

that did make me chuckle Jason!
Thanks for everything guys, you're all awesome - and for those who are also having this procedure, good luck.
Lisa, I did read the brochure but having worked in both histology and cytology I went and did some research and looked up my old notes on squamo-columnar junctions etc and ended up feeding my own fear, prat that I am... I am worried about the pain as I find smears incredibly uncomfortable due to a tilted cervix but it's the actual results I am scared of

I take it you've had more than one consecutive abnormal smear?
Best advice I can suggest is go to your gp and tell him your concern. I recently went to mine as I seem to have abnormal one minute and then clear smears the next and he was able to tell me more about the results.
I've had this twice now and am waiting to go back again for another and it made me laugh when the consultant asked if I wanted to see what she was seeing on the tv screen,lol!2014 Target;

A tad uncomfortable but you'll find the nurses involved in the procedure do this all the time and will put you at ease! If you don't feel right or need anything just ask. My smears are painful so my colposcopys generally are too. You also don't have to look at the screen to see what the camera is seeing if you don't want to. Whatever happens they will treat you with the respect and compassion you deserve and being in the system is a great thing because if there is something going on in there, they will find it and deal with it and give you the support you need.0

I've rung the GP and they're going to ring me back with an appointment so I can get something to help me through it.
mountainofdebt - no, this is my first abnormal one so I'm even more worried.
