I don't suppose the neighbours think it's right that someone can allow a tree to grow over the boundary and impinge on next door's garden and that they had to do the work to cut it back.
The neighbours should have asked if the trimmings could be returned and they should have disposed of them if your parents didn't want them but then your parents should have made sure their tree wasn't overgrowing the boundary.0 -
