Mobile phone default..how to remove it...

Hi
A mobile phone company has placed an default on my credit file for non-payment.
History:
Contract was suppose to finish in August 2008, so, I wrote them a letter via normal post to advice them to cancel the contract as I was not planning to continue with it. As I have finished the contract, stupidly, I cancelled the direct debit.
After that i didn't receive any letter from them and company placed an default in December 2009.
I contacted the company and they said, they have wrote me 10 letters but I didn't receive any letter from them or any debt collection agency.
When I called them they confirmed that contract was cancelled by them in December 2008 as no payment were made after August 2008, but they continue to make payment received entry on my credit file for whole of 2012 before placing an default in 2009.[/U]
So, my question is, the company is also at fault for making a wrong entry in my credit file, should they remove the default on this basis?
I have tell them that as they also made an error and I will settle the amount if they will remove the default from credit file.
But if worst come to worst, what will be my other option to remove this default. The mobile company also said they are not legally obliged to provide a default notice, and i think it is rather unfair that they are making peoples financial life difficult for such a small amount.

IMHO the lower the debt you failed to pay looks a lot worse then a higher debt.
Whether its £1 default its still a default and the company concerned have every right to report this to someone's credit files.
Defaults don't just get put on people's credit reports without months of letters concerning the debt 'now to me if someone can't find a couple of hundred coin in this time then its their own fault and deserve a default.
Also the majority of people who've had defaults placed on their reports are normally those who didn't realise the actual consequences of how this will ruin their credit file for 6 years.0 -
True
but one might not have received a letters. Also most of the people will not just ignore the warning of default as getting credit after that is next to impossible.
But having said this, creditor should not just put a wrong information on your credit file and also should be able to justify and provide evidence of sending a default notice. This is a standard practice with credit card company but mobile company gets away with it.0 -

Why did you write a letter to cancel a contract when you said your contract had finished?0 -
Remember contracts dont have a finish date, only a minimum term.
when you canceled, did you receive your final bill, and information about it being canceled ?
Also, when you did send the letter?0 -
Minimum duration of contract was completed therefore i send them a letter to confirm that i do not want to carry-on with it. I did not receive any further information from them but they claim that they did send me few letters. I didnt move my adds but didnt receive any information. they also said, they did passed it some debt collection agency but again not a single letter or phone call..0

if you didn't receive the final bill, then its likly the contract was never canceled. It could mean they never receive the letter you sent.
But when did you actually send the letter, did you send it in August when your minimum term is up ?0 -
I did send the letter in July 2008.
Main thing that worries me is they were making an entry of payment received after Aug 2008 till December 2009. They confirmed that they didnt receive any payment from me after August 2008.
Under DPA, they are not allowed to put the wrong information on my credit file. I am planning to use this to get the default removed0
