I have nothing useful to add (as ever lol) but just wanted to say how jealous I am! It's sooo hot at work and the thought of a lovely big paddling pool waiting for him at home would be lovely... v tempted to order one!0

Salt on its own is not a sanitiser.
As a temporary measure, you could use a small amount of thin unscented bleach.
Bromine rather than chlorine tablets are better, but you still need test strips to make sure both the bromine and pH are at safe levels. Don't leave the dispenser in the pool while anyone is in it and make sure children don't get their hands on it!

Enjoy!. . .I did not speak out
Then they came for me
And there was no one left
To speak out for me..
