HP monopolised its ink cartriges - any legal solution?

No solution I looked over has worked so far. On other forums people complained of the same. It does not apparently happen to old HP, only to newer ones and it is deliberate.
Kite2010: This is basically what I am looking for, but somehow doubt there is such stuff.
Dalestrider: My priter has no such button. It does not work for me. It does stop me printing.
I guess that big companies can very well afford such a cheeky stuff.
It's not cheeky stuff though - they don't want you to use cheap crap cartridges in their printer, potentially causing damage.0 -
We purchased an HP Printer Photosmart 5520 several months ago. Recently I purchased genuine HP cartridges from Ebay, however on installing, HP software stated the cartridges were too old for printer.
They were the correct number (364) and definitely genuine. Had to purchase a new set from Argos, costing around £20. A full set in WH Smith's were £42!
The cartridges have a manufacture date and an expiry data - i.e. if the inks been in the cartridge for more than 2 years, dont bother printing as it's probably gone solid.
If you take a cartridge and refill it without resetting the chip - the printer will get confused. Just poor quality cartridges...
Also - 364 multipacks (i.e. all of the inks) are £28 from Currys/PC World, even less from Amazon et al.Nothing I say represents any past, present or future employer.0 -
Thanks Jakg, much appreciated.0

That's what I usually buy for my HP Photosmart Plus B209a-m.0 -
its like ps3 not allowing pc versions of the same games to be played on it

I bought a Brother printer based on reviews that cheap compatible cartridges worked well, and they certainly do! No issues after a year.
Loved my old HP but reviews did mention compatible ink issues with new ones, so I decided not to take the risk!
I guess you have to research before buying and be prepared to pay for full price cartridges.Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')
No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)0 -
That's why I'd never buy an HP printer. It doesn't just happen in the IT world - those little coffee machines use pods that are specific to the brand too. Buyer beware I guess."Growth for growth's sake is the ideology of the cancer cell" - Edward Abbey.0

The printers are generally sold at less than it costs to make them, so they need to tie you into supplies. It is an odd market but most consumers prefer it that way rather than paying £500 for the printer.
Commercial printers can be cheaper to run, but cost more.0 -
I think someone needs to change user name

If you call two weeks 'old' you may well be right.0
