Most town markets have stalls that sell phone accessories and unlock for about £25. As stated before in this thread, this is not the same as "jail-breaking" and you will still be able to update with Apple.

Unfortunately not available for Apple unlocks for the 4,4s and 5.

The only unlock is from Apple and only available through the network or the unofficial companies who have access to the Apple system.

He's returned it now as "not as described". He tried market place and went into phone shop and was told by both to return as it couldn't be done very cheaply. Paying the out on top of the price of the phone would have made it more expensive than getting another one.

    Thanks everyone.,

Apple dont unlock phones the networks do, these services on eBay are nothing to do with jailbreaking, they have people who work for the various networks who have access to apples whitelist database that store the lock status of evey imei

    (1) unlocking is done by Apple's servers - the networks may update the locking register to permit a locked phone become SIM free. They take a fee for this as its implied they have to pay Apple for the service

    (2) the rest of your comment is nonsensical. Are you seriously suggesting network staff are offering private unlocking services with the full approval of the network? Define who 'they'' is! Further having access to a whitelist means nothing. The requirement is to update Apple's database of handsets, and this is strictly controlled. When the data is updated, it is the user connecting through iTunes, who 'unlocks' the handset.

Good - but hopefully he sent it tracked in case getting a refund is problematic!

I would have just sent it back as not as described, if the seller said it was unlocked and it turned out it wasn't, then why should be the buyer who has to sort it out?

As the above poster said I hope he's sent it tracked!

Im not saying the networks give their approval, it's simply rouge employees who work in the relevant department or have access to someone that does, if it was just a jailbreaking solution as you stated it wouldn't be network specific it would more likely be baseband specific
