Ryanair hand luggage

We're shortly flying to Tenerife with Ryanair from East Midlands Airport and taking hand luggage only - anyone have any experience of this as I have a few questions:
1) Do they check the weight of your bag before you get on the plane?
2) Are they OK with you wearing a coat with large pockets full of "stuff"?
3) Do they allow you to carry an extra bag of duty free bought at the airport or does this have to fit in your one bag also?
I'm beginning to wish I'd paid for a 15kg hold bag (£70 return) as it's probably going to cost that much anyway to buy toiletries, buy/hire beach towels, wash clothes to wear again, buy a lightweight small case, buy coats with big pockets for both of us!

We flew with Ryanair from East Midlands last month and the bag check was for size, not weight. They came around with a cardboard sleeve of the maximum dimensions which they dropped on top of your bag as a check.
Although the duty free at East Midlands said you could take an extra bag onto Ryanair I am pretty sure Ryanair stuck to the one bag rule regardless, even down to a small bottle of water. Our Boots Meal Deal (purchased after security) certainly had to fit into our hand baggage.
With regard to coats with large pockets you can actually buy coats specifically designed to get around these restrictions (they even have pockets for laptops etc), so yes, you can fill your pockets until they are bulging but don't try hanging a shoulder bag underneath it as they are wise to that trick. Handbags etc have to go into your single carry on case.
Here's a link to a review of coats by Skyscanner

Ok, you won't win any awards in the fashion stakes but it's good to get one over on the airlines.

1) Do they check the weight of your bag before you get on the plane?
Sometimes they do, sometimes they don't.....not worth the risk.

Never seen anybody have any problem with coats & big pockets to be honest !!
3) Do they allow you to carry an extra bag of duty free bought at the airport or does this have to fit in your one bag also?
Again sometimes they allow an extra bag & sometimes they will make you put it into your hand luggage. Its all very random.
Again its up to you if you want to risk it.
Personally I would not......0 -
Since last year, everytime I used Ryanair at Liverpool they checked the weight of hand luggage.
You are allowed one bag of duty free in addition to a standard trolley case, but definitely not a handbag/laptop bag.0 -
Thanks for your replies guys.
I have just been scrutinizing Ryanair's website and they do actually state that anything bought at the airport (even after security) has to fit in your one bag.
Wish me luck!0 -
We have been size checked at the gate and some people have been weight checked. Ŵeve it had problems with carrying food on.
However be wary coming back. At alcante the duty free shop was saying a bag if duty free was ok but at the gate it had to go into hand baggage.
There were some furious girls in front of us on the plane - caught in a double whammy - have to put your 1.5l vodka in yor hand baggage... Got it in .... Ok let's check weight .... Gosh surprise you are now over weight you'll have to pay o check in :mad:0 -
Good luck.
I travel Ryanair often and sometimes I see people with quite big bags getting through. More often though, people are checked in UK for the weight and also have to put the bag into a cage to see if it will pass the dimension test. I have seen people unzipping their bags and putting on a vast amount of clothes and then trying again and getting through.. I have also spoken to people who have paid the surcharge and are unhappy because they have been passed on the outgoing flight.
I agree that the best advice is to keep within the rules and to choose what you wear on the journey carefully and select your heaviest shoes and clothes to wear rather than packing it.
I have looked at these bags which are on the link and personaly, I prefer my kagool with pockets for a sandwich, some sweets, my reading glasses and my book. I would probably sew some pockets into an item of clothing rather than wear any of those rather unflattering items.

I flew in from Murcia the other day and all cases were being weighed. It was so stupid as they were telling them to take the stuff out of the case but letting them on carrying the clothes rolled up under the arms or they were just passing the clothes to other people who had passed through and then putting them back in the case.
They were letting them through with anything bought at the airport though.
Its a hit and a miss really but I would stick to the weight limit. I bought weight this time and was glad I did as it is such a hassle trying to get it right and you know on holiday you always end up buying a few bits and bobs.
If you haven't done your online check in you can still buy it.0 -
HI
I flew RA in June from East Midlands. I didn't have my case weighed as they didn't have scales at the departure gate. They had the cage and went through the queue with it to ensure the baggage fits into it. There was a poster in duty free saying RA allow a bag as well as hand luggage if its duty free but I would ensure it fits into your suitcase just in case.
As far as I know they only scales are the ones used when you check in hold luggage, they might ask you to put your hand luggage on too just to check but unless they start having scales at the departure gate you should be ok and they didn't as of mid June.
