My daughter 12, regularly gets upset at her failings in spelling.
Having just looked at some of her emails to and from friends, call me paranoid, I'm not F%c&ing surprised. I know I've looked previously, but not one single word spelt correctly or un-shortened.
I have a sneaking suspicion the next time she says, "I can't spell......." the sympathy vote may just fly out the window,
And I do not blame the teachers, I blame myself and every other parent that lets them get away with.
 but going to have a  .

When I text my kids I make a point of doing full words and putting in grammar, capitals etc..... it might be the only time they see it from other people!!Torgwen.....................

I can understand the use of abbreviations on mobile phones but I hate it on emails... particularly business emails. If it is a private email I seem to have no problem understanding the abbreviations but in a business secenario I think it is very unprofessional to use the abbreviated form. I always plead stupidity (easy) and send the email back to the person saying I don't understand it. If I am in a particularly playful mood I just respond with NFIWYM (No F**** Idea What You Mean) or some other inane sequence of characters which means the originator spends ages trying to figure out what I am saying.
I do agree though that levels of spelling and grammar are plummeting ... you only have to look at many of the posts on this, and other, boards for evidence.
IvanI don't care about your first world problems; I have enough of my own!0 -
This is one of pet hates. I occasionaly might shorten too or two to 2 and you to u but only when i am running out of space and to stingy to send 2 messages. But when i get some completely shortened text message i cant understand a word it says.
My daughter is to young to have a mobile yet, so havent had to have this from here and she is an excellent speller as well, so hopefully she wont start shortening words when/if i buy her a mobile.0 -

One of my kids has problems with spelling though and any properly spelt words might help (or not!). On my phone it's hard to shorten some things anyway so I end up putting full words rather than go to another screen, alter it and back just to do a shortened word (ie go from predictive to abc or numbers & back).Torgwen.....................
