Tyre prices - anomaly

Options
Hi all,

I went to a local tyre place yesterday for a check and was told I needed to replace my front tyres, which would cost £250 total. I said I would sort it out in next few days.

Then I went on the tyreshopper website and found the same tyres, fitted at the same garage, would be £150. I ordered these and also got £7.50 via topcashback.

So 43% cheaper for the same tyres fitted at the same garage! Is someone losing money somewhere, or does the garage make a massive profit if I buy direct from them?

Regards
James

Massive profit. They'll always look to make the most money they can, hoping/assuming you won't shop around.

Yup - massive profit for them if you don't shop around.

As long as some customers are unquestioningly paying the big price they will keep quoting those high prices.

Only if sales drop will they even consider reducing them.

"Charge as much as the market will bear" - sound business sense I think it's called in the trade.

I call it capitalist greed - otherwise known as 'Thatcherism'. ;)

    As above.
It's not like buying groceries. Many drivers are not so savvy regarding cost, so pay whatever they're told is the price. No opportunity for the supplier to increase the price after giving a quote, but plenty to reduce it if necessary. The extortionate profit on one [STRIKE]sucker[/STRIKE] customer paying the full price more than covers one disgruntled potential customer walking away.

  • That system doesn't work with all.

Kwik fit once quoted me some ridiculous price for an exhaust, local competitor would do it for half the price, no problem sir we'll match that.!!!

Oh no you won't matey, you tried to turn me over cos you could and you'll never have to worry about me darkening your doorstep again.

Are you sure they are the same tyres though.

Although they will charge as much as they can, Almost double seems rather excessive.

This could make for an interesting comparison.

If the OP were to post the exact brand and tyre size they were interested in we could have a quick check and see what we come up with.

Over to you Mr J Joyce. ;)

Not many companies offer their lowest price straight away.

The last tyres I bought were Michelin Synchrones, Kwikfit online price was around £580 for 4, I went online and ordered from Blackcircles, total cost was £360 inc fitting. Plus they were fitted at my choice of local indie at a time to suit me.

at my place of work we earn £15 to £20 profit on each tyre fitted, there is no money in tyres considering how long it takes to replace tyres especially low profiles.

example 205/55R16 budget we charge £54 all in we buy them in at £30 + vat each.
