No its not. However, It is prudent to temporarily move the phone when food is served and wine is poured.

What about the general etiquette debate of mobile phone use when dining? Many like it to have a certain ambiance. Someone with their phone on the table who could suddenly have an annoying ringing then start chatting loudly are still not welcomed by many people.

The debate of whether or not to leave a phone on a table when dining is irrelevant in this context.

Not everybody on the phone shouts. And your opinion about phones and etiquette is of no relevance. Plus op may have been texting or checking email and not phoning people.

Bit daft leaving the phone on a table with food and drink all over the place.

Not as daft as this comment. The waiters job is to deliver the drink to the table, not over the table

But still when someone with liquid comes within the area my brain would say move phone just in case!!

    See above!

My brain goes liquid may damage my property.

Surely then it would be daft to assume a waiter is 100% flawless!

They are people, not robots! Anyone going down the they should be perfect route is just going down the compensation culture route!

The major should of course refer to mess etiquette and not allow the phone on the table at dinner.
