any mechanic worth his salt would be able to easily tell just by looking at the components whether they need changing or not.

I bought a used golf, it's on 96k, last timing belt stamp was on 56k (but services book was full after that), with timing belt change at 40K intervals i took it to my local mechanic. he told me all the components look more recent than 4 years old/40K miles old. He told me that the kit was changing maybe 5/6k miles ago so doesn't need them changed at the moment.

Only if he takes them off to inspect every part.

I replaced the pulley's on my old MK2 Mondeo. They all looked fine but i replaced them anyway.

Good job i did. When i removed them the webbing on the back of them had cracks appearing.

When doing a cam belt on VW group engines the other 'bits 'n bobs' (water pump etc.) have to be replaced because they are made in the same factory as Kinder egg toys :D

When I worked with Nissan, back in the days before they went 'all chain', no other parts needed to be replaced when doing a cam belt.

My assumption would be that Honda are more akin to Nissan..?

Bad move with a Golf in my opinion, as per my previous post.

Well, the thread has been open for over 36 hours and we're on page 2 - no 'facts' so far...

I can't see Honda using cheap plastic internal components like the French and German's do to be honest - don't forget they have the reputation of building pretty much the World's most bullet-proof engines.

At the end of the day you are not the technician, They are the trained experts they should advise you and you make your mind up. They have clearly failed to do this. So as a result i would expect them to put right. Simple

So what does an interim belt change consist of?

Where have you come across the term 'interim belt change'?

He was replying to a comment about a 'major belt change', it's a bit of sarcasm.

Ah, that makes more sense :). (Thought it was a nonsense concept but missed the sarcasm!)
