Is it possible to hide your identity when buying a house?

Is there anyway to buy a house without the seller knowing your identity?

If not, how long can you keep it hidden for?

Thanks :D

Well that's a question that raises a thousand alarm bells.

Basically the answer is no, your name will be on the deeds at the Land Registry.

You could buy it through a Ltd company, but you'd still be listed as the director of the company.

Why on earth would you want to do that if not for some seriously dodgy reasons?

I know it would be once its on the deeds. Just wondered if we could hide it during the process.

We're looking at moving back into an area and our old neighbour's house is up for sale, who we didn't get on with particularly well. That's all.

    Yes.

But it's not easy or cheap.

Buying from family you're feuding with or people you know that don't like you is the usual reason.

    Is it a cash purchase?

Well I imagine all will be revealed when the exchange of contracts comes into play, they wouldn't have to sign the contract if they were unhappy with it. Why anyone would stall selling their house over an old feud is anybodies guess, but I have found people to be rather unpredictable and downright foolish sometimes!

I'm just guessing here, but I'd say exchange of contracts is going to be your day of revelation.

    Kind regards,
    Cal

Do you really want to get all the way to exchange only to find out they won't sell to you?

Disguising the trail for long enough to shroud your identity to a vendor is not hard, provided no mortgage finance is required.

The use of offshore companies, nominee directors, trusts, etc, will achieve the goal.

It's expensive and relatively complicated though.

And becomes virtually impossible if lending is needed, unless it can be done through a very accommodating friend or family member that can slip below the radar of the vendor.

I would have thought the various solicitors involved would have some serious concerns about this. Certainly in my industry anti-money laundering and tax evasion controls are being massively tightened.

I guess for a cash buyer it's not such an issue though. Although you're quite right - very expensive way to do it!
