Accident Damage

Options
I was involved in a car accident yesterday (not my fault) and my car has been taken away to be repaired. The damage done to the car was that the front bumper was ripped off and headlight pulledl out so I think it will be repaired rather than a write off.

This car has been a really unlucky car for us, 7 accidents/scrapes in the last 5 years, mostly minor cosmetic damage (all not our fault bar 2 scrapes) so anyway after yesterdays accident I have lost all faith in the car and am nervous that these are all a build up to 'the big one' (superstitious I know). Prior to this car neither of us have had any accidents or scrapes. Think it's time to get rid once it is returned to us.

When selling the car or part exing it do I have to declare the accident damage or is it seen that as they have been repaired car has been returned to its original condition?

Just worried that going to have a very negative impact on the cars value. I know any insurance write offs show up on a HPI check but do accident repairs through insurance show up as well or is it only the write offs that show.

you only need to declare it if asked
  • Thanks for that, I thought that might be the case.

I'll prob be putting it in as a part ex so I would imagine a garage will ask as a matter of course, not looking good.

Depends how old it is and whether its the sort of car they sell.

    It maybe straight to auction.

I have never been asked this when trading in a car or motorcycle. I always think that the dealer with assume the seller will lie, so they don't bother asking and do their own inspection. It's what I would do in their position. As others have said, if you are asked you should tell the truth, but there is no need to offer the information.

If you sell if privately, be careful how you word the advert. Avoid terms like 'excellent condition'.

Thanks for all your replies. Lets hope I end up at a not very inquisitive garage.

I definitely won't be selling it privately, would feel too bad not to say anything to a private individual. Which is stupid as that is who the garage will sell it on to but just doesn't feel as bad getting rid of the car to a garage. I suppose I figure the garage will check the car our thoroughly to double check the car is ok before selling it on.

The car is an 06 Toyota Corolla Verso so not sure how likely it is to end up at auction rather than the forecourt.

Wouldn't bother me that a car had a new bumper as long as the paint finish is good. Way I look at it is no stone chips :).

I was reversed into when my car was six months old, new bumper, wing, and head light, still looks good as new two years on.

    Your car isn't unlucky.

But make sure the next one is a nice bright orange, yellow or red - the make and model won't make a difference in likelihood of being crashed into, but the colour will make a tiny difference in your favour.

What we should do is get all those useless idiot drivers off the road. And I speak as someone who was wiped out in February and had my fairly new Passat written off so you have my sympathies. But don't be superstitious.

You blame the car, then admit some of them were your fault? :D
That's your driving, not the car.

5 non-fault and 2 fault accidents within five years, your insurance has gotta be sky high, must take ages to get quotes online.
