My dog just turned on me and now I am scared!

My hubzy is in the middle of 4 weeks of 12 hour shifts and has been gone since 6am and isnt home until after 8pm tonight and I dont want to call him or anyone to be honest.
I do love my dogs but I cant see what I did to deserve this, didnt provoke it and am now scared and still have 2 weeks alone during the majority of the day with my dogs!
Plus feeding time is at 5pm for both dogs and I am terrified.

Failure is only someone elses judgement.
Without change there would be no butterflies.

Is the dog outside in the sun ?
what type of Dog are we talking.Be happy...;)0 -
I'd be scared too, do you have a friend or neighbour you could go to? What sort of dogs are they? Do you think they might be too hot in this weather? Might be worth phoning local vet or RSPCA for advice. Good luck0

If this is the first time it's happened, why are you terrified of your pets?
If one of ours did this, I would first check that there's nothing wrong with him (pain can cause a dog to snap) and, second, consider that the hot weather may be stressing him out.
I would separate the dogs so that you only have to deal with one at a time. Try to act normally - they will get further stressed if they can see you're anxious and scared.0 -
No both are free to roam indoors and outside (as I hook the patio doors open) but I have provided him shade. Indoors they have fan on low at the moment which their not bothered by. Change his water regularly and keep it indoors in the cool. They had their 'breakfast' and 'lunch' on time and it's not particularly hot here today quite a breeze. I have shut them in between 12 and 4 on the hottest days so they dont overheat.
He (the one that bit) is a Lurcher X Collie. The other is a Greyhound X Salukie (M). Their both older dogs. Do have a tendancy to have problems at feeding time (ankle biting other dog bit like sheep hearding. Used to go for our shoes but that was solved) but we have got round that through diversion and training techniques.
This incident wasn't related to food though not sure what caused it to be honest.Failure is only someone elses judgement.

Can you describe the situation in as much detail as possible for us? Setting, people/other animals, what everyone was doing, etc?
There's a lot of things it could have been, and doesn't necessarily mean it will be repeated-if he's old he may have some hearing or sight loss and been surprised, pain from joint problems, things like that. It could also be caused by something physical, again by something like joint problems, so could be worth making a vet appointment.0 -
was he snarling/ showing teeth before he bit or just a quick nip/ bite he might have got a fright and defending himself ..the heat or be hurting0

If he is an older dog his eyesight might be deteriorating, making him panicky. Are you sure he got a good look and you and was aware of your presence when he snapped? What were the circumstances at the time?0

What actually happened? The phrase 'turned on me' is quite subjective and can conjour up all sorts of images.0

You do know your dogs surely? I can't imagine you'd go from perfectly happy to terrified of them based on one snap!
Agree that we really need details to be able to help, but it is very very hot today. My two aren't themselves at all, and they've been kept in the cool all day.0
