Confused about o2 Travel on PAYG

Some of these may sound daft, but this is the first time I've dealt with this and I'm confused.

My daughter is going away with school to France next week and she's asked to take her mobile. This is actively encouraged by the school as they'll all be given contact cards with emergency numbers of the staff on the trip and will also allow the kids to contact us to say they've arrived safe etc. Although the school did say something along the line of a "cheap £10 brick with some credit so if it gets lost or stolen its not too big a deal as they won't be covered by our insurance, so no smartphones/tablets etc".

The tariff my daughter has on her phone is a PAYG where she gets a bundle of texts/mins/data each month for a fixed price. I've looked at myo2 and from what I can gather she has the Travel option on so can use her phone abroad. I'm just wondering how it works? I'm happy for her to use her phone but would the texts come out of her bundle, or be charged at the 8p rate? Also do I have to inform o2 that she's going out the country. Her phone is linked to my account and I'm obviously staying here, would that be a problem?

The whole thing just confuses me at the moment so if anyone can help clear things up for me I'd appreciate it.

It would be charged out of her credit.

Just check that the sim does have roaming enabled on it.

It is not necessary to check with O2. All O2 PAYG sims have roaming active.

With O2 Travel data is charged at £1.99 per day for 15mb instead of the standard 46p per mb. Prices for calls and texts are the same.

If you call your daughter it will cost you the same as if she was in the UK (or come out of your inclusive minutes e.t.c.)

O2 Travel for PAYG covers data usage only. O2 Travel for Pay Monthly covers the voice network too.


You have not stated if the mobile can access data or whether your daughter will be using data to communicate(WhatsApp/FaceBook) etc
This is not advisable unless she is very disciplined and will either keep within the 15MB per day limit or better still, turn Data Roaming off altogether(in this case O2 Travel PAYG will not be necessary nor of any use).

The model of mobile telephone is also important.

How does O2 Travel work?
You'll only be charged £1.99 for each day that you use data in Europe

If you don't want O2 Travel, you can choose to pay our European rates by simply calling 2202 from your mobile.

Charges:
Calls back to the UK and within Europe - 24p per minute.
Receiving calls in Europe - 7p per minute.
Texts sent to the UK and Europe - 8p (free to receive).
Sending a media message - 25p.
Data is 46p / MB.

Thanks for the advice/info.

She doesn't have a smart phone at all and hasn't used any data as far as I know since she got the phone. At 12, in my personal opinion, she is too young to have a smartphone (although I do allow her to play games on mine occasionally) no matter how much she complains that her phone isn't cool.

So I need to call 2202 from her phone to set up the European rates, that's a job for first thing tomorrow morning. I'm not sure where she's put her phone and she's already in bed & asleep No point calling it either as she tends to leave it on silent!

If there is an option to turn Data Roaming off, do it.
