Thanks for replies everyone. I bought the Wacom bamboo pen and touch in the end. I went for medium, which is about A4 sized, and that seems a reasonable size.
As usual, it arrived, the two kids were fighting over it that evening ... and haven't touched it since! Still, hopefully once the school holidays start properly they will spend a bit more time with it. I tried it out, and I was surprised how different it is from pen & paper - I saw a blog saying that you need to re-learn how to draw, so practice lots of doodles before you try to draw a work of art, and I think that's right.0
