Using Galaxy Note for drawing

My DD would love to have a graphics tablet for drawing (she's 14, so just about to start Art GCSE). I've been looking at Wacom bamboo pen and touch tablets. I can imagine that it is quite tricky to get used to drawing on a tablet and seeing the result on a screen, so the thought crossed my mind that it would be easier on a Galaxy Note, where you could draw on the tablet itself. It's more money than I wanted to spend, but if we are paying out around £100 for a tablet, would it be better to put that money towards saving for the Galaxy Note?

So my question was, has anyone got experience of using these as a graphics tablet, and what would you choose?

Wacom tablets are easy to use - with a decent spec PC - You just watch the screen at the same time as drawing on the tablet
I used one a few years ago connected to an old PC and it was a little slow reacting - they are better now
How about a visit to PC World (or similar) to let your daughter try one to see how she gets on with it ?
What does the school recommend she gets - They are the experts !!

It really depends what she's wanting to do, the S-pen on the Galaxy Note tablets works well but there's limited software for it whereas on the PC you can use the graphics tablet with a very wide range of software. It would probably take a little time to get used to but I think she would probably pick it up fairly quickly.

I have a Galaxy Note 2 - it's a phone foremost, secondary use would be drawing, and it's a very expensive way to buy a graphics tablet TBH. The S-Pen actually uses Wacom's internals as I understand it, it's pretty cool, but the apps are limited - far better off using a real graphics tablet and a PC with GIMP or Photoshop where the results can be massively more controllable and less fiddly.

Thanks folks! I've decided to go for it and buy the Wacom bamboo tablet, so hopefully that will do a decent job. I've still got a hankering after the Galaxy Note, but if I'm honest that's probably more as a toy for me rather than my DD, so maybe I will treat myself one day if they get cheaper!

(Oh, and asking the art teacher is a good idea in principle but her teacher is a bit old-school so anything electronic is not on her radar! And the IT department is just obsessed with teaching them how to do spreadsheets, which is a complete snooze-fest as far as DD is concerned.)

definitely get the wacom, and the bigger the better (depending on the art work involved!)

Print them out just in case. You never know what the future will bring and think what her "early works" might fetch!

    I think he does but....

    compared to...
    hockney.pool-2-figures.jpg

after watching a programme where he was talking about it, he just likes the instant nature of it... imo the difference in quality of his media is marked (but could just be him getting older)

anyway a graphics tablet is more widely used for producing digital art than an ipad, and should be more accurate - I'm sure I remember hockney saying that he couldn't be as accurate as he wanted with the ipad because he could only use the edge of his thumb for fine details, rather than a fingernail!
