housing benefit has been drop alot

Hi. I use to have a friend/carer live with me classed as a non dependant but he moved out a couple weeks ago , i wrote to housing benefit stating this but that the 2nd bedroom would still be used for overnight care.

I got a letter back today saying i'll be getting just 62 quid a week now classed as 1 bedroom but i need to send in proof that the 2nd room will be used for overnight care which i can do Fine.

Before i was getting 242.30 a fortnight , so its quiteeee a jump down, my rent is 525 and im in Torridge district in devon. Will this go back up when i send the form back in about the 2nd bedroom?

Im panicing abit now as its quite a drop in benefit.

thanks for any help.

What do you mean when you say the room will be used for overnight care? Is a carer going to be sleeping in this room?
  • hi, yes the carer would sleep over.

  • Overnight carer cases are dealt with on a case by case basis, there's no set rules on who will and won't get it. The government have left everything extremely vague which they do to pass the blame onto councils whilst pretending nobody will be affected by the cuts.

Best advice is to provide proof of DLA or Attendance Allowance if you receive these (they're not always added to claims if it doesnt affect the result of HB depending on individual council procedures so the person looking at your case might not know you receive them). Also provide details of the care you need in the form of a letter from a GP, Nurse, Adult social care worker etc if you have these. A care plan document also strengthens your claim.
I work as a Housing Benefit assessor, any advice given is for general information purposes only. It is not, and should not be construed as, financial or other professional advice.
  • Under 35 - has a carer - loses severe disability premium - only entitled to SRR.

Is it social housing or private rented?
These are my own views and you should seek advice from your local Benefits Department or CAB.

If you are under 35 I think you get the shared room rate.

It doesn't matter what you are actually renting. As you are a single person under 35 years of age you will only be paid as if you are living in shared accommodation. However, I don't know whether your DLA will have any affect on this.
