Taken a monthly contract out with three.com
just taken a look at my bill and they charge
extra on top of your monthly allowance for 0800
numbers
They do not allow you to phone 0800 with
your monthly allowance of minutes.
10/15 minute 0800 freephone call has just cost me over £5
despite me having 500 minute credit

Welcome to the world of mobile phones.

Other than GiffGaff (who offer them free) and some T-Mobile contracts (in the allowance), 0800 calls are not free or included in any mobile call allowances.

You need to check on individual mobile operators call charges as some have 0500/0800 calls to charities and helplines which are are free.

    For information
From the Virginmedia web site http://www.virginmedia.com/money/features/10-things-you-shouldnt-pay-for.php?ssid=5

0800 numbers are meant to be free but the key word here is 'meant'. Calling the number from a mobile can be rather costly, so if you don’t want a nasty surprise in your next bill, and can’t escape 0800 numbers completely, then head to 0800buster.co.uk. It gives you a code which lets the 0800 call count as part of your free minutes.

I have not used 0800buster so cant comment but Virgin Media seem to suggest it ok

There are also some Android apps including "WeQ4U 08 0870 0800 0844 0845" which offer 0800 numbers from your inclusive call allowance.

It stupid, Ofcom are a networks best friend..

07 numbers are UK mobile but some are charged per minute as personal forwarding numbering services or one of the islands around the UK are 'dependents'

    also

08 numbers should state the cost of calling from any phone in the UK

    0800 0p a minute

    0801 1p a minute

    0845 45p a minute

    0871 71p a minute

Its not hard to figure out or implement, but why would Ofcom give consumers transparency when their licenced pals would lose revenue and EU termination and roaming charges have made their pals SO poor its like they claim DWP benefits as shareholder dividends - financially that's a disability in itself, best be giving them DLA and blue badges from the poor to address the balance HM Government.
SO... now England its the Scots turn to say dont leave the UK, stay in Europe with us in the UK, dont let the tories fool you like they did us with empty lies... You will be leaving the UK aswell as Europe ;)
  • "Ofcom said it wants all calls to 0800 numbers to be free, even from mobile phones. However, despite saying the new measures to make call costs more transparent were much needed, it said the changes will not be implemented until the start of 2015 at the earliest."

I'm afraid this is common practice with most of the networks. I'm with O2 and if you dial an 0800 number you get a message saying you have to pay and they also make you hang up and call again with the initial 0.

If you have an iPhone you can get an app that converts 0800 numbers into a landline number which you can then call using your minutes (I don't know but you can probably get something similar for other smartphones).

No they don't ! GiffGaff make no charge, neither does Orange on my tariff.

3Uk have always - so expecting it to be free was an incorrect assumption...
