Does anyone know how this is supposed to work ?

According to the BBC, wikipedia etc - theres supposed to be a cap on the price of sending an SMS within the EU of around 7 or 8p.

O2 - according to their http://www.o2.co.uk/support/internationalandtravel page say sending a text costs 20p !

Are O2 getting it wrong? Or does the cap only work if you're sending the texts *while* you are abroad ?

Any thoughts much appreciated :)

The cap applies only to texts you send *while* you're abroad, not to messages you send from your O2 sim to international numbers.
So yes, sending a text to a German mobile phone number would cost more if you send it from London than from Paris.

I spoke to Tesco mobile about this too. It's 20p to text an EU no from England, but 8p if you're roaming.
This is probably because EU law seems not to affect the domestic tariffs, only the roaming ones.
    20p a text is a rip off.

Stiff upper lips = bad customer service, regulation and inequality, never mind COST !
