Samsung Galaxy II - Inserting contacts

Although used to my old Apple 3g iphone, I have just been given a Samsung Galaxy S2 which seems very nice. Except with the contacts book ... I am finding it doesn't seem to accept long surnames ... I'm also used to putting not only phone numbers but email addresses in the contacts book ... When I've looked this up on the internet it does say it should say "Next" on the keyboard after inputting the phone number but my phone only says "Done". Surely there must be a way around this all? Can someone please help me? Thanks!

No, the reason you can only put a (short) name and number is because you have set the phone to store contacts on the SIM. If you change it back to the default of saving contacts to your Google Account or to the phone then you'll be able to do what you want.0 -

This is correct, save to phone and its extremely customisable.
You can choose a large variety of subheadings, and long names are no problem (I called this contact "CISAS with some extra added").
For eg
And then the option to add (from the menu)

Thanks so much for this clear explanation ...
Just one thing - how do I switch it from SIM to phone?!!! I can go into the edit and see where it says SIM contact but can't work out how to switch it to Phone. Duh! It must be easy but for me ... I'd be grateful if you would help me with this! 0 -

When you have the contact on screen, choose to edit it, and then touch the type, in your case "sim" and change to "phone". (My contact type was "google contact" in the image below).

Will all your friends and family agree to you leaving their contact details online?
Google have blocked me from leaving feedback on apps because they think my username is not a real name. Big shock that one... Why would i put my real name?Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -

Could you clarify a little, I don't see any contact details of friends and family in this thread.====0 -
I always save my contacts to my google account. It means if you ever lose your sim or phone they can be easily restored even if your phone was wiped. It's easy to do as well on your contacts - I learnt the hard way to always backup my contacts onto Google account.0
