Work outside contract hours?

Why should OP use own free time (presumably unpaid!) to carry out a work related task?
OP are you a union member? Talk to your rep and ask for support in requesting that you be able to do this during your normal working hours.0 -
In the grand scheme of things, my advice is to bite the bullet and sort it out. The last thing you want, especially in this economic climate, is to be seen as difficult to accommodate one-off requests.
Things like this happen at work, best to deal with it and not kick up a fuss involving unions and arguing about your contract for something that will only take two hours to do.0 -
I'm afraid if the rule is that new ID card is a requirement of the job, and that this can only be obtained from the office during the day then you have to make the time. Just how things are I'm afraid.
Take the young one with you - will be an outing for you two at the same time.0 -

I'm not suggesting kicking up a fuss. I'm suggesting OP negotiate with employer to be able to carry out work related matters during working time. It may be that management just haven't considered the requirements of those on shifts outside office hours.0 -

And if the person who takes the photos and prints the Id cards out only works daytime, then they have to come in during the night, just to do one badge. So will be consulting their union about the request.

Maybe the badge can be printed during the day and collected from a manager later?
Maybe the badge maker can be offered overtime/TOIL to do the late shift one day?
Maybe one of the OPs shift can be trained to make and issue the passes for workers on that shift?
There are many possibilities that would be better solutions for OP and other staff. All I'm suggesting is that these are explored with the employer.
I'm not sure why other posters are suggesting that having this conversation means there needs to be a fuss or a fight about this!0 -

If it's an ID badge it usually has a photo and they would have to sign to say they have collected it in person. That's why it takes a while to do.
I think going to the union at this stage is overkill, personally.Sanctimonious Veggie. GYO-er. Seed Saver. Get in.0 -

Why is it overkill to ask for support from a colleague? Clearly OP doesn't feel comfortable raising this directly with the employer at this time. Maybe discussing with the union rep would give her the confidence to speak with a manager one to one, or maybe the OP would prefer the rep to come with her or help her draft an email to the boss. Her rep may have experience of dealing with this situation and what solutions were found that were of benefit to the company and the employees.
Asking a workplace rep for support in having a conversation with the employer is not provocative or confrontational in any way. I'm not suggesting the OP demands that the union call a strike over this!0
