Work outside contract hours?

I'm contracted to 3 nights a week.
We need new ID card but we have to come into work in the day time to get these done.
In the day time I have uni and small child so I can't get in, which is why I work the nights in the first place.
They're now saying that because my contract requires this I will be refused to come into work until I get this done(!).
Do I have any rights at all here or do I need to sacrifice my uni work and come in?
I've worked for the same company for 10 years now.

Surely it wouldn't take that long to pop in to get the card? How long can it take?!

Most university courses don't require you to be in class every day, so couldn't you take your child with you one day when you are not in uni?

Yeah it would take me about 2 hours in total to sort. I'm angry that they've given me 2 days notice to sort this though and I defiantly can't come in in the next 2 days...

I'm not the one getting all dramatic about a requirement of my job that will take all of 2 hours to sort out, claiming it to be a "sacrifice" to my uni work!!

2 hours really isn't that much time.

You could go before classes
Go after classes
Go inbetween classes/at lunch
Go during a class - missing one class won't hurt and it's the difference between working and not working
Possibly take your child with you
Get someone to look after the child for 2 hours - family, friend, a work colleague, neighbour, childminder, school club(?)
I assume the ID requires a photo, but if they already have a photo on file could a work colleague get the ID for you and give it to you when you next go to work?

If you can't make it in the next 2 days what about the day after that? It's only one day. Worst case is that if you're meant to be working on the 1st or 2nd night you miss a day or two of work if they won't let you work.

A lot of things like nursing, social work etc can run all year around.
