You cannot find the REG number from a part number on a mirror.

That part number will narrow it down to a million cars or so.

Why were you not in the left hand lane? Good job you were not on the M5 a week or so back. Ticket for lane hoggers.

  • As it is an untraced third party and no "significant injury" was sustained by either you or your partner, the MIB won't pay for the damage to your vehicle so you'll have to swallow for the cost of your own repairs out of your own pocket or use your fully comp insurance and pay the excess.

A few years ago I was rear-ended (totaling my car) and the police couldn't trace the other party. I got a full payout from the MIB for the total loss. It took about 3 months from accident to cheque.

There was a supplementary amendment to the rules of the scheme in 2011 which introduced a clause which says the MIB will only pay out for property damage on Untraced claims if "significant injury" arose.

Their definition of "significant injury" was injuries facilitating a 4 day+ stay in hospital post incident. Which rules out 95%+ of claims and means the MIB (the insurance industry) have to pay out less.

Interesting. Looks like I was 'one of the last' as my accident was in August 2010.

You know for certain that tickets have already been issued for MLH?

Even if you had the REG, It wouldnt necessarily do any good as one of the reasons for not stiopping is an "Illegal" car thats probably not registered anyway.

Pretty clever partner - can simultaneously measure the velocity of a car (when travelling at over 100 mph) AND accurately measure the passage of 3 seconds whilst getting over the shock of being hit by this ton up car!

Your comment either doubts her ability as a driver (or 20+ years and this being her first accident), or suggest she lies. Nice.

As a note, I assumed it took about 10 seconds for the car to disappear from sight, but also estimated 10 miles to the garage we pulled into, even though she said it was more like 5 miles. The next day we checked it was actualyl 6 miles. If her estimate of the distance was more relaistic than mine, does it not stand to reason her sense of judging the duration also more accurate than mine (ie, closer to 3 seconds?).

I'm not sure what your motive is.

    1) We were on the A406 North Circular (not national motorway) maintainign the 50mph speed limit with more than enough distance between us and the next car ahead - no reason to sit on the inner lane till our exit, nor did it justify the outer lane where the car that hit us was travelling on.

Sitting on the inner lane would also limit vehicles joining the traffic on the A road from the exist we do not need.

I have just been informed by the mechanic that our car has substantial damage onthe underside that costwise works out to the cost of the car PLUS 1 year's insurance, easier to clasify it a write off.

I have so far told my partner under no circumstance is she to lose her 5 years no claims (3 months to 6 years) on this. Unfortunately we just have to find another car,.. and the police are not prepared to do anything further. Gutted.
